We've now been at the waterpark for an hour. Roman has tried to get me to talk to Steve and figure things out but that's the last thing I want to do right now.
When we finish eating the snack I've packed Roman stands up and says, "I'm going to take Camille and go on the lazy river with her. I need some alone time with my pumpkin."
She smiles up at him as he scoops her up. As they walk away he shoots me a look. I sigh and say, "Steve, we need to talk."
He nods so I say, "These past couple of days I've felt really taken advantage of because I've been meeting your every need. I know that I'm to blame for that one too but I wanted to make you aware."
"I had no idea Laynie. I'm sorry."
We sit in silence for a minute and then he says, "I wanted to apologize for how I treated you after Camille was born. I was an asshole for not sticking to the agreement we had about work. I'm glad that you left me. I'm also happy that you found Sean. He seems like the perfect guy for you and he's better than I'll ever be. I'm glad that he gets to raise my daughter with you. I couldn't have asked for a better man to do it."
At first I'm left speechless from what I've heard. After it has sunk in I say, "Steve, you have no idea how much that apology means to me. Never in a million years did I think I'd hear you say that what you did was wrong. It makes me even happier to know that you're not mad that Roman is helping me raise Camille. He's become such a wonderful person for her to look up to."
He nods and says, "I know and that's why it was wrong. I guess I just want us to be able to talk to each other without regret and hatred. I want us to be friends, not only for our sake but for Camille's too."
I agree with him and then Sean and Camille arrive. As we make our way to the next waterslide I tell Roman what happened and he says, "I'm proud of you sweet heart!"
I smile as we share a quick kiss and then begin our walk to the top of the slide.
