---Roman's POV---
I grab Laynie's hand once we're enroute to the hospital in the back of the ambulance. Tears slide down my cheeks as I brush her blonde hair away from her eyes. I place a gentle kiss on her forehead and then close my eyes. I can't imagine anyone who would want to shoot such an amazing person, but that's the life of a cop in a nutshell. We're good people who try our best to do good and then get punished by the people who only see the bad.
I'm brought back to reality when the paramedic in the back with me says, "You need to let go of her. We're at the hospital."
I nod and place Laynie's hand by her side. I wipe my tears away as the remove the stretcher from the back of the ambo. I hop out and follow the medics as they rush Laynie into the ER.
They run her into a room and transfer her to a hospital bed as quick as they can. After Dr. Rhodes looks over her they rush her out of the ER and towards the elevators. I'm about to enter the elevator with them when Rhodes blocks my way and says, "She doesn't need another cop following her everywhere. Take the stairs pal."
I push past him into the elevator and say, "Laynie isn't just some other cop. She's my girlfriend and I am going up with her."
Rhodes backs off and then the doors close and we shoot upwards. I glance at Laynie and I can't feel anything but grief and helplessness. I'd do anything to be in her place right now.
We soon arrive on the level where all of the operating rooms are. Laynie is rushed past me and I'm hurriedly told to go to the waiting room. I go there reluctantly and take a seat in one of the chairs. I bury my head in my hands and begin to let the silent tears rush forward. If Laynie dies, not only do I lose my other half, but Camille loses her mother. Since Camille isn't officially my daughter she'd undoubtedly be sent to live with Steve and I'd probably never see her again. My already broken heart would then by ripped to shreds.
I let out a shaky breath and then I feel a hand on my back. I look up and see Dr. Will, Halstead's younger brother. He takes a seat beside me, clears his throat, and says, "Laynie has the best trauma surgeon in the hospital working on her. He's also been doing more surgery on different organs and it makes the whole thing remarkably better. He'll do everything he can to remove the bullets and repair any damage or bleeding. It's up to us to pray that none of the bullets hit a major organ or vein. We have to hold out hope that she also didn't lose too much blood before receiving a transfusion."
I nod and then Will pats me on the back one more time and leaves. I sit on my own for a while with dark thoughts swimming around in my head and then I see Antonio walking my way. He sits down beside me and hands me my gym bag with my change of clothes and a paper bag with lunch from a diner downtown. I thank him and then he says, "How's she doing?"
I shrug and say, "I don't know. No one is telling me a damn thing and all I know is that she's in surgery."
Antonio nods and says, "That's pretty typical. It sucks but we have to have faith. Laynie is one of the toughest people I've ever worked with and I know she wouldn't give up this easy. She'll somehow find a way to pull through."
I nod and then say, "Do you guys have any leads yet?"
Antonio shakes his head and says, "None. The guys who did this were good because they knew exactly how to hide from our cameras. Everything else we've looked at has come up inconclusive."
I nod and run my hands through my hair. We sit in silence for a few seconds and then he says, "I'm sorry Roman. I shouldn't have let her go down there by herself. It's my fault she's almost dead. I was stupid."
I look Antonio right in the eye and say, "Don't you dare blame yourself on this one Antonio. There's nothing you could've done to stop this and it's not your fault that she's here. It's the fault of the sick people who decided to shoot a good cop and an even better person."
He nods and says, "You're right. Thank you. Anyway, I should be getting back to the district to help with the case. I just thought you'd need a change of clothes and lunch. Make sure you keep your badge and gun on you, just in case someone comes looking for her. Keep us updated, alright?"
I nod and thank Antonio. I then go change and go back to the waiting room. As I eat my sandwich all I can think about is that there's a very good possibility that I'll lose my girl.
