When I arrive at work and storm over to my desk Dad looks at me with a very concerned expression in his eyes. He calls me into his office almost immediately after that. As soon as the door clicks shut he says, "Is everything alright?"
"No Dad but I'll be fine."
"If it's anything to do with Roman I'm not afraid to kick his ass, even if the two of you have only been together for three months."
"Dad, it's not Sean. It's some Mom's at Camille's new playschool. They were criticizing my lifestyle right behind my back, with Camille right there too, none-the-less. I put them in their place though."
He nods and dismisses me. I go back to my desk, take a seat, and log onto my computer. I'm about to call Roman and warn him about "The Moms" when my phone rings. I pick it up and say, "Detective Laynie Voight."
"Laynie! How are you and Camille doing?"
My entire body freezes, my eyes go wide, and chills run down my spine when I hear his voice. I gulp and then say, "Steve."
"Uh yea, that would be me. So how are you guys doing?"
"Fantastic. We're at our best without you."
There's a pause and then he says, "I figured. Anyway, I've been thinking lately and I really want to see my daughter. I've never been to Chicago so I'm going to make a trip of it. When should I come?"
I sigh and say,"I'll have to talk to my boyfriend and see when we can both get vacation time.I'll call you back this time tomorrow with an answer."
He gives me his number and then I hang up and sigh deeply. I don't see how this day could possibly be any worse than it already is.
