I smile at Erin as she walks into the dress shop. We share an embrace and then she says, "How have you been holding up since the Ray case?"
I shrug and say, "Good, I suppose. I've gone to a couple of sessions with Dr. Charles and he said it's probably a good thing I've come to terms with my past, or at least started that journey. He said it could've been detrimental if I had kept it to myself for much longer and something else significant had happened to break me. I wasn't too far gone this time around."
She smiles and says, "I'm happy to hear that. Have you told Sean too?"
I nod and reply, "Yea, I did. After confessing to my Dad I knew I owed Sean an explanation too. I told him everything and I was so scared of what he might think of me and that he might think I was being selfish for keeping something so huge from him but he was so supportive. I asked if he wanted to postpone the wedding and if he needed time to be sure I was still the one, but he said that when he slipped the ring on my finger it meant he wanted me for all that I am and my past, no matter how rough and rocky it was, is still a part of me. He assured me that nothing changed for him so here we are, trying to find me a wedding dress."
Erin laughs and then a lady comes out from the back and says, "Laynie Voight?"
I nod and then Erin and I follow her back to a private dressing area. Once we're seated the lady says, "My name is Alice and I'll be helping you find your dress today. Can you describe what you're looking for Laynie?"
I think for a moment and then say, "Well I do have a three year old daughter from another relationship so I would like to keep it more modest than others would but I also want the dress to make my fiancé's jaw drop. So I guess I'm looking for something flirtatious, not sexy."
Alice smiles and says, "I definitely have some dresses in mind for you already. Let's get you into your changing room and then I'll go pull dresses."
Soon I'm trying on loads of dresses but Erin and I agree that none are quite right. Finally there is only one dress left for me to try on and my hopes are not high. However I have to try so I slide into it and then look at my reflection in the mirror. Staring back at me is someone so beautiful I hardly even recognize it as myself. The dress is a lace mermaid style gown with a sweetheart neckline, lacy straps, and a sparkling beaded belt. I smile, knowing this is the one before I even show Erin. As soon as she sees it her jaw drops immediately and without hesitating she tells me it's the one. After we know I'm getting this dress I change out of it, pay, and then Erin and I go home.
