A snapping of a stick had Bethany up and alert. Looking around she didn't see anything. She looked up and came face to face with a sleek panther.
Not really sure what to do she watched it's tail flick back and forth for what felt like an eternity. The second she noticed its body tense she had teleported to another part of the jungle.
Landing in the river Beth had first come to she swam to shore. Dragging her body on to the bank she caught her breath.
She gathered her thoughts wondering if she really had over reacted. A rustle made her stand up ready to fight.
"Bethany it's just me." Tina said wiping sweat from her forehead.
"I'm sorry I rushed off."
"Listen. I know that it was really sudden, and I don't know why you ran off, but you have to come back."
"Max and I...we were close. One of the days I was supposed to be experimented on I feigned sickness so I could skip just one day. So they took Max instead." Beth looked from Tina down to the water. "And all I could hear was the screaming. Screaming that turned my blood to ice. Suddenly it stopped and about five minutes passed when they carried Max's body by my cell. I saw...there was so much blood.
"I screamed for hours until Siward finally let him see him. I checked for a pulse, but it wasn't there. I listened for a heartbeat. Something, but there wasn't anything. I was positive Max was dead, and it was my fault."
"Bethany-"
"But then he's up there hiding away, and I don't know what to think, say, or feel. What should I think? That he came back from the dead? There wasn't a pulse Tina!"
"I don't know Beth. Why don't you ask him? I know that he couldn't have died because he's up and breathing."
"I didn't die Bethany."
Turning around she came to look at Max leaning against a tree looking up at the sky.
"My pulse was so low that Siwards machines could barely pick it up. When Siward brought you to my hospital room they didn't have me hooked up to anything. He wanted you to think I was dead. If I had been hooked up to machines with wires all over my body it wouldn't have given you the impression of my passing. Maybe he even lowered my pulse on purpose. I don't know I was unconscious. And none of this 'it's my fault' crap either. It's not, okay? I'm alive Bethany. It's okay."
Bethany didn't say anything in response just nodded. Twiddling her fingers in an attempt to stem her nerves.
"Shall we begin training then?"
"I thought you'd never ask." Beth smirked before following Max as he jumped into the water to go back to their little cave in the cliff.
