PIPER’S P.O.V.

As soon as the door was closed and my seat belt was on, I raised my phone to my ear and started to call Anne. I wanted to avoid the awkward car ride as much as possible, but I knew the phone call would only get me so far.

“Hello?”

Thankfully, it wasn’t too late so I didn’t have to wake Harry’s mom up. I would have felt even more awkward than I already did.

“Anne, It’s Piper.”

“Hey, love! Sorry, I didn’t have your number saved. What’s up?”

“Well, I hate to impose, but...”

“Oh, goodness. What’s wrong? You sound upset.”

“I kind of need somewhere to stay tonight-“

She interrupted me and I could almost hear the smile on her face.

“Darling, why are you asking? I’d be thrilled to have you for the night! Gem, Piper is gonna come stay with us. Harry didn’t do something stupid, did he?”

I chuckled into the phone, forgetting for a moment who’s car I was in. I glanced over and saw Karen’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“No, nothing like that. Thank you so much. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“Wonderful! Room 356.”

After we had both hung up, I put my phone in my bag and clutched it to my chest as Karen drove in silence. Once we were stopped at a light, she turned to face me and I awkwardly looked at her, awaiting the words I probably didn’t want to hear.

“You know, you guys aren’t going to last, right?”

She seemed calm and cool about her jab, but I could tell she was a bit nervous. I'd had enough of this.

“No, I don’t know that and you don’t know that. No one knows that. I don’t understand what your problem is. Aren’t you already doing enough to hurt him? Say whatever you want to me; I’ve dealt with worse than you in the past month, believe it or not. So, give me your worst; I really don’t care what you have to say.”

She was shocked and trying really hard to think of her next insult. The light turned green and she drove while she spoke.

“It’s the same thing every god damn time. Do you honestly think you’re the first girl he’s brought here? The first girl he’s fucked in that flat? You’re so naive, Piper. You’ll be gone in no time just like the rest of them.”

Her words stung, but I could tell she was saying anything she could to get a rise out of me.

“Really? Because I think you’re scared that I won’t. You’re scared because I’m the first girl he’s brought around his mum and even worse, around Andy. Say what you will, but I won’t believe for a second that he’s ever done anything to hurt that little girl and you can’t deny that. I don’t think you mean a thing you’ve said about me. You’re just afraid that I won’t be gone soon and that I’ll end up being around your daughter and-“

She interrupted me and I could her the quiver in her voice.

“And, let me guess, you don’t care? Do you know how hard it is to have a baby girl that you love so much and then have to worry that some other woman is going to swoop in and win over all of her love?”

“Actually, I’ve been working on trying to understand people, no matter what fucked up shit they pull,” my mind briefly flashes to James, “and Karen, I don’t personally know how that is, but I can imagine it sucks! I really can and I’m sorry if that’s all you see me as. I would never try to steal her attention away from you. You’re her mother and you ALWAYS will be. Nothing and no one can change that. She loves you.”
