How did I get so lucky?
"What the hell is going on?"
"What's all this about?"
"Boss is taking so long."
"Micah better have a good excuse for calling this meeting on such short notice!" A man huffed.
"Yeah! I was getting in the shower!" A woman added in.
"This is so out of the blue!"
The gang members continued to murmurer meaningless complaints among each other until a rather handsome man made his way to the middle of the room where all eyes became directed on him. That man was Jason.
-
All eyes were on me, everyone's attention, people waiting for my next move or what I was going to say next. Ignoring the swooping birds making circles in my stomach, I coughed awkwardly and glanced around the room until my eyes feasted upon the most beautiful girl in the world, Paisley. My fiance. She appeared almost confused as she stared back to me and soon mouthed, 'What the hell are you doing?' Her facial expression gave away the shock running through her. Shaking off a chuckle, I pulled the note that Micah had written for me to read to the gang from my back pocket. Just as he had told me to do, I began to read the words on the paper aloud for the entire meeting to hear, my voice was only a bit raspier than normal from nerves I suppose.
"East side,
Thank you for your time and work over these many, many years. It is time for me to move on with my life, I have some unofficial business to take care of. Therefore, I am removing myself from the gang."
There were seas of gasps and eyes could have popped out of several individual's faces, so I continued to read from the note,
"The circumstances in which I am making these decisions are quite unfair. I'm sorry for the inconvenience I am not leaving you empty handed though, you will now be taking all your orders from Jason McCann. He is the most qualified man on the team for this position and I believe he has what it takes. There will be no trouble.
Boss."
As soon as the last word escaped my lips, I felt even more pressure than before, the tension in the commons could have been cut with a butter knife. Glancing around, I noticed several peoples' faces boring straight back into mine. They appeared to be examining me. I cleared my throat once more before folding the paper back up and sliding it back to it's original spot in the side of my jacket. There was complete silence that overwhelmed the crowd of people.
Then a sound that was most unexpected, the sound of clasping hands together. Someone began slowly clapping, I turned and my eyes fell upon the girl I loved with the brightest smile I had ever seen painted across her face. Her hands beat together loudly and many others around her joined in until finally the entire room became and uproar in standing ovation. I thanked her through a look in my eyes and a quick wink.
I was thankful for that girl, damn, how did I get so lucky?
- Paisley's POV
Jason? As boss? What in the actual hell was going on? After he finished the note though, I could be nothing but proud of him. I knew this is what he always wanted, to be in charge. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that he would be able to do this. He would be an even better boss than Micah. Speaking of which, I wondered what could have happened to him? Micah has always cared for the gang more than anything else as far as I knew, whatever happened must have been big.
I couldn't help it, I began to clap loudly for the man I already adored so much. Soon enough, many others joined in and the sound of appreciation came together. Jason's attention found me and he shot a heart wrenching wink that knocked my knees from under me every time.
God he was perfect, how did I get so lucky?
