Baby?

Beep. Beep. Beep.
There was slow beeping noises, they were precise and sharp. The sound became deafening to my ears once I realized I couldn't escape it. Not only could I not escape the beeping, but I couldn't open my eyes. I couldn't feel my body. Everything was impossible to move, everything was dark, leaving my defenseless body to be cut off from the rest of the world. I heard slight shifting in a chair I suppose next to me. Where was I? My mind tried its best to go back in time and remember what happened, but all I could grasp was that I was going out to a movie with Sam for a girl's day. It took a moment, but then I remembered. We were hit by a huge truck. I tried my best to swerve, but it was too fast and still got to us at the end. Was it enough to put me in the hospital though? Even more, was it enough to put me in a coma?
The beeping continued, and I eventually found myself unable to tune it out. That's when I heard something being opened, the door I assumed. Not seeing things was frustrating, it felt like a game having to guess everything that was going on around me. I could feel the touch of someone's large hand surrounding mine, but I couldn't even flinch in return. I wanted to say the palm belonged to Jason, but I wasn't sure. Another voice broke me from my trance and I soon found myself focusing in on the stranger's voice, "Mr. McCann?" The voice bellowed as if it were a question. My heart immediately quickened at just the sound of his name. "Yes?" A much weaker version of Jason's sound came out. I wasn't used to hearing him so, distraught? Even though I couldn't physically see him, I pictured him being a complete hot mess.
"We're gonna have to ask you to step out for a moment while we run some more tests on Paisley James." The doctor's smooth voice explained to the man I loved. Without a word, I felt the body only a couple feet away rise up and within a moment his lips were pressed to the back of my hand, "I won't be gone long," he promised doubtfully. He probably doubted the fact I could hear him, but still I appreciated the gesture. I wanted in that moment to grab him and plea for him to stay, but when I attempted at it, nothing happened. My body stayed utterly still, and just like that, Jason's foot steps were fading away. "Dammit," the voice in my head cursed.
-Jason's point of view
My heart was throbbing, almost beating out of my chest even as I shuffled my way down the endless hall to the double doors. They were heavier than I remember from when I had visited other gang members before, either that or I just felt weaker. More than anything I felt vulnerable and scared even. I would admit to it. Everything I've ever loved was laying in that room I just left, and she was on the verge of death. Hanging by a thread. I can honestly say I've never been so terrified in my life, even when it was my life on the line. Nothing compared to this drop in my stomach that continued to weigh me down like shackles around my ankles.
Everyone's eyes shifted to me as they heard me approach the waiting room. "They're doing some more tests," My voice was dry and bitter. I felt dead. Everyone did. Paisley had become such a big part in everyone's lives here and we all knew if she didn't come home with us, no one here would ever be the same. Serena and Haley's eyes continued to stream black rivers of tears down their faces. Sam and Kami were attempting to comfort them while holding back their own sobs. Haley had only received minor injuries, but no one knew how that was possible considering it was her who was supposed to get the worst of the accident by the way the cars aligned at the scene. No one could explain it. Laron and Beau appeared to be choked up, and completely silent in two chair next to each other but all the ones surrounding the boys were empty. My eyes then traveled to Katie, Damon, Harry, and Dalton who seemed to be lost in an emotionless conversation.
A police officer entered through the door that lead to the outside, he waltzed directly over to us. "Anyone here for the accident including the Black Range Rover and 18 wheeler?" He asked as if he already knew the answer. The eleven of us instantly stood, and the girls tried their best to pull themselves together for at least a moment to listen in on what the police man had to say. Coming to close in the circle his eyes filled with sorrow, "How are the girls?" He questioned. All of our eyes wandered back to Haley who was standing in a cast, a bandage on her left eye brow, and bruises decorating her body. "Paisley isn't as lucky," My voice spoke dryly, which only caused more sobs from the girls, especially Haley. "Paisley? You mean the driver?"
We all nodded in unison to answer his question.
"Ah, yes. That's why I'm here," The man began, "It seems you have a very loyal friend, young lady." The 10 of us followed the man's eyes to Haley who was standing next to Beau, wiping her eyes with the sleeve she had pulled over her hand. "How so?" She stuttered out through the tears. "After investigating the scene for two hours after you both were taken off in ambulance, it was clear that you should have been killed. You were six inches from dying, darlin'." Beau's expression went into shock, same as Haley's. "The only thing that saved you would be your friend, Paisley. It seems she must have pushed you backwards into your seat and threw her own body in front of yours." Haley immediately broke out into sobs.
I stood there, stunned. Of course I should have expected this. I knew Paisley would do anything like that for a friend in a heart beat. She was so caring and loved everyone around her. The officer continued on for a few moments, describing the scene, telling us the man driver the truck would be facing jail time for running his stop sign and also for the results of his actions. Hearing about the man sent anger shooting in every vein in my body. It seems that Sam realized before her hand was placed on my right shoulder as she gave me a soft look. My body remained tense the entire time the officer went on. So Paisley saved Haley? That's my girl.
Not even minutes after the officer left, the doctor came back into the room and caught all of our attention, "Paisley James?" He called while glancing up from the clip board held tightly to his chest.
- No one's point of view.
Everyone formed a semi circle around the doctor, "Do we have any family members of the patient?" He questioned. No one spoke up, but Jason stepped forward and surprised everyone when he looked the man dead in the eye and spoke in a barely audible voice, "That's my fiance." The doctor shot Jason a sympathetic nod before continuing, "Even through this rough patch, I'm sure you would be happy to hear that the baby is doing just fine, but Paisley is still at a 50/50 chance." Everyone's eyes instantly fell to Jason as he stood with a confused expression written all over his face, "Baby?" He croaked out.
