Envelope
There was silence. A deadly silence.
Small flames scattered the cold, cement ground. The crackling of the fire sent shivers up my spine. We were sitting ducks in a pond of dead people. Then it hit me, we won. The insides of my stomach flipped, turned, and twisted in ways I never thought possible. I turned back to Jason with love in my eyes, "It's over." I confirmed, throwing my arms around the man in front of me. His reaction shocked me, however, he just stood there like a statue. I pulled back with a confused expression only to realize his features were harsh.
It's not over.
A crisp clapping sound slowly echoed through and bounced off every wall in the opened court, "Nicely done," Jonathan's sickening, gut wrenching voice broke out. The noise disturbed any sense of happiness I was once experiencing. "Jonathan." Jason grunted under his breath as his hands clutched his gun so tightly that his knuckles were turning white. My hand came in contact with his forearm as if to tell him to calm down.
"Give us Branson," I ordered, looking deeply into the piercing eyes of the man who stole my baby brother from me. There wasn't a bone in my body that didn't want to lunge at him and shred him to pieces in that very moment. "Can't do that, sweetheart." Jonathan's voice sang. Jason's body became even more tense next to mine, "I would listen to her if I were you."
"I can't give you your brother because you never completed your mission," Jonathan began and joined his hands in a clasp in front of his torso as he continued, "That is what we agreed on, was it not?" The more this man spoke, the more reason he gave me to rip his head off. Keeping calm, for my brother's sake of course, I replied, "You know we could kill you in a matter of seconds. I suggest you be a good bitch and obey." Jonathan let out a fake chuckle, "I can die happy."
My eye brows met together in confusion.
"Silly girl," Jonathan stepped towards me whilst Jason reacted by pulling his gun out and his arms fully extended. The gun aimed directly at Jonathan's head. We had him right were we wanted him. To tell the truth, we were gonna kill him even when we got Branson back. After all, what would stop him from pulling another stunt like this again? "What are you talking about, Fields?" I referred to him with his last name. He just snickered as a response then tossed me something. An envelope.
"Go on," He sang, "Open it." I looked to Jason for approval, gaining it I began to tear apart the envelope. Once I disposed of the wrapping to the ground, I hesitantly turned the slick paper over. The contents within that envelope could never be unseen. It was something that would haunt me for the rest of my life. Something I would never live down. Something that ruined me. Something that in the moment made me pull my very own gun and without a second thought mutter, "You sick bastard," Before pulling the trigger and ending that man's life.
This all happened right before my breakdown. That envelope destroyed every human piece of me.
