Questions swirled around in the lawyer's mind. Things he hadn't dared ask aloud agonized him, tore at his soul. Pieces of information had buzzed his eyes and ears, but he refused to speak evil. He didn't know how he had arrived at this point, feeling as if the brink of total insanity were near. Yet a feeling of red in the cold, black winter poked at him, tempted him. He didn't know what to do with himself except try to escape from an insanity that threatened to stab through the very brim of the heart that was the only thing keeping him human. Miles Edgeworth was completely and utterly stranded to his own devices.

It had been a week since Sabrina's confession. Yet, he could not approach the painful truth that stood before him. Wright was still in Kanto, he had seen him once or twice on the city streets. However, like Edgeworth, the man was deteriorating to the face of something. An evil within, a psychic aggression. He knew that he too was corroding in such a way. That's all he knew now: the newspaper. He watched, trying to find any information on Sabrina's connections with Team Rocket. The police had suspended the trial for investigations to be made. He'd been too afraid to ask Julia all week how Sabrina was. And even then there was issue on how both Kaitlin and Julia were faring, to hear the woman they looked up to was part of the organization that ruined their lives.

To the police, the ignominious abrogation of Sabrina from her position was by far the nadir of the last 8 and a half years, or so he believed. Vapid articles decrying the government for their so-called failure of securing the future of Kanto were ubiquitous. Subsequently, the once deferential pride to the psychic prowess of Saffron City in which people had placed their faith for the longest time, had turned into a fetid revolution and raze through the press. The notion that there would be any support for the defense of Sabrina was a quixotic one which he tried not to fear. It was not like she deserved anything from him. Her grounding had made been clear upon their last meeting.

He went back to the book he was reading. It was best if he didn't think on the subject. Instead he transitioned his mind to the colored text in his lap. Julia had checked it out for him with her library card. It was about the narrative history of the Second Great War between Kanto and Johto. Opening the prologue, he began.

War is an art of deception, a game. The Second Great War was the result of a competition between two nations in terms of showing the ability to taction an army. Most of the war was fought in eastern side of Kanto under the guise of guerrilla warfare from the Kantonese who had been invaded by Johto. Labeled as the city of blood from the many street killings, Saffron City was the strategic forefront of the war. Those known famously known in Kanto as the hunters of shadow were said to surround their enemies in and out of the city of blood, driving them to insanity before killing them.

Strength of mind was a main concept of the war. While fighting was an important part of affairs, the main point of everything that happened was the enormous pressure both sides placed on each other. The Kantonese hunters of shadow refrained from bold attacks, instead picking off their enemies one by one. The invaders from Johto used their influence to try to hunt out those who were in the lucrative militia.

Random searches of residences and inspections were scare tactics the Johtonese used. Documents and fingerprints of all suspects were taken. The hunters of shadow would respond by raiding Johtonese military bases and retrieving the information of the soldiers there. After doing so, they would haunt the soldiers with the things the things they were scared of. Knowing the tactics and spoils of war themselves made it easy for the hunters of shadow to understand how to induce their foes into paranoia. Combined with the robbery of military files and subsequently the past of their enemies, the Kantonese destroyed the soliders of Johto with mind games. By the time they picked each one off one by one, their victims were walking dead.
