Before I ask about characters let me say this...
Yes Odell is a tad abusive and no I wasn't making excuses for it amongst the chapter. It's just funny that y'all forgot all the stuff Odell went through and clearly so did everyone else. Everybody had his back when the incident first happened but after he got into football nobody checked on him mentally. Those type of things usually trigger aggression, depression and anger in a person involuntarily.
Yes he really does love Bash as crazy as it may seem and they are indeed complicated but life ain't always a walk in the park.
