"You know I'm so glad I decided to walk you home." Calum chuckled looking around quite fearfully.

"Right," I rolled my eyes, "I know that you just didn't want to walk home alone in the night huh did you Cal?" I chuckled. He pulled me into a tight side embrace and I dug my nose into his chest.

"Well yeah that, and I wouldn't want anything to happen to you either. So we're here for each other." Calum grinned. I smiled. Cal always had a point for everything. Sometimes it annoyed me and sometimes it made me think that this one little characteristic was what made him different from many guys. Calum was a keeper.

He wasn't mine though. We were best friends. No, not the cliché childhood friends, we were just co workers and happened to bond a lot through complaining about life. We sort of had a lot in common which made us closer and eventually we were having sleepovers and sharing the deepest and darkest of secrets to each other like the fact that my last name had a huge history behind it that no one knew.satMy thoughts were cut off when we were both startled by a noise in the distance.

"Did you hear that?" Calum whispered and I nodded.

"Sounded like an...animal." I whispered.

"Maybe it's a wolf." Calum grinned. I rolled my eyes.

"Maybe it is." I joked along. We began walking again but stopped as we heard the noise again. It sounded like a sad howl. It was an animal for sure and it sounded like it was hurt. Calum began walking again but I tugged on his sleeve. He gave me a questioning look.

"Let's go see."

Calum sighed, "See this is why I choose not to walk you home sometimes because--" as Calum began rambling I turned and walked towards the alley. "Hey wait!" Calum called fearfully finally noticing I had disappeared. I chuckled as he appeared at my side. "Sometimes I wonder if you're like secretly a spy or some shit, you're like always observing everything." he muttered.

"Hey, don't mind me I like adventures." I shrugged as we 'ventured' on but by 'ventured' we stepped through puddles of water. The low whimper came again but this time it was much closer. Calum gripped onto my arm tightly as soon as the lighting got a bit darker and I was fumbling for my phone to turn the flashlight on.

"Angie let's just go." Calum spoke after a few moments gripping tighter onto my arm. I could lightly make out the veins in his arm popping out as he gripped my arm. Calum hated the dark. I had forgotten he would tell me things like when he opened his eyes and pitch blackness it would feel like he's suffocating. As if the darkness is wrapping itself around his neck. I suddenly felt bad.

"I'm sorry Cal-" I started but stopped short when I noticed a small dog ahead. Cal immediately let go of my hand and jogged forward afraid to scare the dog.

"It's a puppy." Cal whispered. It was laying on its paws and was wet. I walked closer and scrunched up my nose. It smelled like...wet dog. I crouched down next to it and took a closer look then gasped.

"Calum..." I whispered slowly hovered my hand over its head and pet it when I noticed the puppy didn't even do so as flinch. Calum pet it too then lifted its chin up.

"It's hurt." he whispered. It was skinny and had dried blood that blended in with the wet mud on its white fur. I nodded softly lifting it up but it whimpered and let out a small growl. Calum glanced up at me. "We should call a vet or something the people who take care of the animals."

"Like the Humane Society?"

He nodded and I slipped my phone out as Calum cooed small reassuring words to the small, weakened puppy.

"It's been beaten."

"She's been beaten." Calum corrected me.

"Yeah, they're gonna keep it in the infirmary."

"And...it's in very bad condition. It's got fleas, hasn't been fed well, and severely beaten."

"It's very scared."

We were sat on break talking to two other of our coworkers the next morning. They listened carefully and Calum seemed really down.

"I'm going to visit her everyday." he whispered munching on his salad.

"That's so sad." our coworker Betty mumbled. She almost had tears in her eyes and her nose was red. "I'm going to go and visit it too."

"I don't really know if you can, I mean it's like inside in a special place."

Betty nodded, "Well hopefully when she gets better."

"Hopefully." Calum and I both sighed at the same time. I watched as Calum sadly twirled the salad around in his bowl. Calum always had a soft spot for dogs.

"You think she'll get better?" Calum whispered. I nodded pressing my lips tightly in a forced smile. Calum sighed and stood up putting his salad away and walking out. The others left too as I just sat silently taking in the few minutes I had left.

··Calum··

"Can I see her?" I mumbled to the familiar worker I saw last night. She gave me a long look then nodded inviting me behind the closed doors.

"How is she?" I asked the young worker. She looked down.

"Still very weak. We're working on her. We are having to feed her with our hand because she won't eat.

"And the fleas?" I questioned.

"Still working on that." she mumbled reaching in and petting the puppy. I walked over and bent down to it's level.

"It's ok girl...it's ok Beauty."

"Beauty?" the worker smiled at me, a small smile.

"Yes she's beautiful." I murmured. Sure she was hurt, and a mess but I knew that she would get better when her fur grew back and she was no longer skinny.

"That's a beautiful name." the worker commented. I smiled.

"Thanks."
