(A/N: November 11th marks Remembrance Day here in Canada. To all Canadian soldiers and troops who fought protecting the country and didn't make it back, may they rest in peace)

You were attending a Remembrance Day ceremony in Toronto. Tears were building your eyes as you thought about Shawn, your husband who decided to protect Canada by joining the Canadian Army. Most deployments he was in were successful, but this time it was different.

Just five months ago, he was deployed to Afghanistan. In the midst of all the war, he unfortunately got shot and died. His fellow troops were devastated after the mission. Shawn was one of the most dedicated soldiers to fight for the country and has never backed away from a fight. His casket was expected to be delivered during the ceremony.

You teared up along with many another families who also lost their loved ones protecting Canada. Finally, the caskets arrived, each one with a huge banner of Canada on top of it.

You cried a little harder as you saw Shawn's casket with a portrait of him wearing a soldier's uniform. The casket was placed on a ledge and a sergeant goes up onto the podium to have a little speech about each soldier that never made it back After about 5 speeches, it was time for Shawn to be talked about.

"Shawn Mendes, our greatest soldier to fight for the Canadian Army..." He begins to speak as you got out a tissue to wipe away your tears.

"He has been one of the most dedicated soldiers who were deployed but never returned. We are all very proud of him and his great efforts to serve Canada. I'm sure his wife, Y/N, and children are also very proud of him as well. You will never be forgotten, and may you rest in peace." The sergeant concludes his speech and a moment of silence is done to respect the soldiers.

After the ceremony, you returned home and looked at a picture of you and Shawn in his military uniform the day before he got deployed. You grabbed the picture and kissed it.

You then walked to the bedroom to find a note inside the table drawer. It was the note he gave to you on the day he got deployed. You opened it and read it:

My dearest Y/N,

Being separated you is a feeling that I never thought would happen. I loved you from the very moment when we first met. Every single memory we've made together has been the most memorable ones out of my whole life. And now, I'm being deployed and possibly having to die out there during the war. I promise you Y/N that I will do my very best to fight for Canada and return home to your loving arms again. Being in the army is something I've always wanted to be, and I'm finally living my dream. When I return, I promise that I'll give you all the love that you've been waiting a long time for. If I don't make it, don't be too upset. Be strong and understand that I sacrificed my life so you can live today. I hope that you and the kids will also be very proud of my service and dedication. On Remembrance Day, if I don't make it back, please attend and you'll be able to see me again after a long time being separated. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see your beautiful face again. That last kiss that we shared today will be the most memorable one that I will never forget. It broke my heart when I saw the kids crying and begging me not to go. I hope that I'll return and tell you all the stories during my deployment.

Till we meet again, I love you and take care

Shawn xx <3

You cried and folded the note as you looked again at the picture you got from the living room. You placed it on the table, next to the note and a poppy that Shawn gave you before he left for deployment.

Shawn Mendes never returned, but you were proud of him that he died for a good cause, and that was protecting the people of Canada, including you.
