"Fucking shit."

You couldn't hear properly with your left ear from the impact with the ground, your right eye was mugged with the blood dripping down from your forehead and coincidentally enough your muscles felt like they were already convulsing. A sweat came down your temple as you tried to remove the hair from your face by puffing out some air. A hand was gripping the handle of the maneuver gear - the blade piercing the titan's face right above the cheekbone and cutting through the roof of its mouth as your feet were shaking while holding its mouth open. Your free hand was clutching the small one of the little girl that was half-way into the mouth of the titan and crying immensely while struggling to keep its hold on your sweaty palm.

You were able to pull her out to the point where she was almost out of the titan's mouth, but your knees started to wobble at one point and you cursed the lack of reinforcements you had in the region. Hanji said she was off to help Mike's squad and you stayed along with Adam and Dylan, but the two dumb idiots got lost and now you were all alone. The fault wasn't theirs, though. You rarely followed orders strictly and straight, so Hanji must've known you weren't going to this time either and left you with them both, knowing that you were okay as long as you could stay together. Guess what?

Apparently you couldn't stay together in the first place.

Now you were wondering how to call reinforcements or help the girl out of the mouth of the seven-meter titan on your own without killing her subsequently. The small ravenette was screaming hard and chocking on her own sobs - you knew you wouldn't have been any better if you were in her place - but it was making you distracted from the titan and you were in no state to get absentminded right now.

"A little more. Come on. Everything's gonna be okay, don't worry."

You never knew if those words were meant for the girl's ears or if it was your own self you were trying to calm down. The best variant was that you were somehow gonna get out of the place with your jammed gear and the worst was that you were both dying in the mouth of that titan. Your mind desperately clung to the thought of the first variant as you felt the girl's tiny hands wrap around your waist. Maybe you could use your 3DMG to fly to the closest building and escape the titan - that was the most convinient way to do things right now - and from then everything was even easier.

A thing flashing into your peripheral vision managed to ruin your plans, though. Drowning in thoughts and considering every possibility for you to run away, you'd forgotten to actually include the variety of the titant moving around to catch you in your inner equations. Everything seemed bad enough already, but the blurry vision you received and the sudden way the air was knocked out of your lungs in the next moment made things even worse if possible. The girl's terrified scream echoed in the seemingly empty town square as you battled for a gulp of air and clutched the kid's back so it could stay glued to your body instead of fall down and meet its death sooner than needed.

When black spots started appearing in front of your vision and you could no longer feel the lower part of your body, you knew things weren't gonna turn out well at this point. Your left hand clutched the handle of the maneuver gear harder and you made sure it was steadily jabbed through the titan's skin. You could no longer tell if your legs were still attached to your body, but judging by the fact you weren't inside the titan's mouth already they were in their place for now.

Suddenly just as all hope left you, you witnessed a flash behind the titan's neck, you assumed they were wires - their impact was heard as their hooks jammed into the building next to you - and you were overjoyed because of it - Dylan and Adam had found you. Another fast movement flashed in front of your eyes however and somewhat you knew even with your dizzy mind - neither of your comrades could move that fast.

In a second, blood erupted from the nape of the titan's neck and its hold on your torso ceased, making you finally gasp for air and blink out the tears that appeared in your eyes. The girl was no longer screaming, but tears were running down her face fast as she watched you and you knew you had only one choice. Jump now and hope for the best or die on the spot. And you weren't giving up so easily.

As your hand pressed the button on the maneuver gear handle and the blade stayed inside of the titan's skull you gripped the girl's body tight and jumped off the way of the falling titan. The kid panicked and clung to your body as hard as possible, so you had a chance to grab the other handle of the 3DMG and release the hooks into the closest building that came into sight. A sight all too zoomed-in for your dismissal. Quickly assuming the landing wasn't going to be a soft one your body took a turn to the left side and you managed to keep the girl safe by slamming your own self into the wall of the building. Managing to catch yourself onto the near balcony just before you could fall down, you made the girl climb inside the small balcony as you took a breath and analyzed the situation.

Your saviour suddenly came into view and you witnessed the Lance Corporal's stoic face before he hooked his wires right next to you on the other side of the balcony where the girl was and landed swiftly onto the wall - the worn out soles of the leather boots on his feet came in contact with the hard wall creating a small thud with with their soft landing as he watched over the damage with calculating smoky eyes - and slowly exhaled the long consisted breath of relief.

"(L/N), for a moment there you were a fucking goner. Where are the other idiots you were with?" You glanced briefly over to the little girl on the balcony as she stared in bewilderment and awe at the raven haired's figure and a soft sigh left your lips.

"I don't have an idea where Dylan and Adam are at, sir. We got parted at one point." You stated and witnessed the small purse of his lips as he watched the already evaporating titan's body.

"And you decided to go on a suicide mission?" His glare was more than piercing in the single moment his ice-cold eyes returned back to yours and you couldn't force the gulp down your throat as much as you tried. But an answer you managed to voice out.

"It's not suicide if you're helping somebody." The pain in your skull was getting more dull, but your body was still recovering from the painful expirience and you could feel the discomfort settling itself into your torso, feeling specific spots on your body as if still getting gripped by the titan's hand. For a moment you just needed to close your eyes and force yourself to breathe steadily, fighting against the pain in your body.

"It's suicide as long as you're as helpless as the one you're trying to save." Levi's words pulled you back to reality and you took a few seconds to register the superior meaning behind that small argument to your previous statement.

"You're implying I'm weak?" The question wasn't rethorical, neither was it the kindest of them all. The undertone of it was challenging as if you dared him to answer you positively.

"Yes. I fucking know now why shitty glasses took you in her squad. You were neither stupid or had a death wish, so I though you weren't suitable for her team. Guess I was wrong." The emotional pain that creeped into your mind probably made its way onto your face as well because Levi's own face - even with its lack of emotions - managed to show the fact that he wanted to brush off the topic. With a quick glance to the side as he managed to pinpoint a titan in the distance, he cut straight to the point and ordered: "Whatever, let's go. I can let her nag you for almost dying after we get back."

"Yes, sir." You nodded your head obeidently and he was about to take off before you stopped him again. "Sir?"

"Hm?" His gaze pinned itself hard into your (e/c) eyes and you felt yourself falling into them before you forced your gaze away from his and gestured towards the little girl that was still standing on the balcony and just observing you two.

"What do I---" Before you could even finish your question, he snorted and cut you off from talking furthermore.

"I'm taking her." His glare was directed towards the girl this time as he ordered sternly in a cold voice: "Come on, brat." With a single hand reaching towards the balcony and beckoning the girl to go closer and grip it tight.

"W-Who are you?" She asked with a wary voice. It was the first time you actually heard her talking and it made you furrow your eyebrows at the fear that creeped into the tone of her small and light voice. The strict Lance Corporal paid no mind to it, though and just gave her a cold look before opening his mouth to answer.

"Does it fucking matt---"

"Sir!" Your voice was lost at the high note into the exclamation because of exhaustion, but it was still both abrupt and loud enough to cut Levi off and make him look at you. His smoky eyes were directed towards your own hardened (e/c) ones and you suddenly felt all confidence leave you when his dominant vibe met your insecure one throught the small clash of gazes you had.

"Your reason as to cut me off in the middle of a sentence, cadet?" The question was said with voice dripping of spite and undertone challenging you to say a single thing out of line after all you did, making you avert your gaze from his and look into the girl's insecure form - still shaken and afraid from the unpleasant expirience she was forced to endure at such age.

"Just for a clarification that this is a seven year old girl, sir." You cleared your throat and your voice went to its normal volume, but Levi didn't pay attention to that - already having overlooked the situation at hand and deemed it unworthy of an argue or a scold.

"Whatever. Now you - come." He was back onto the little girl as she climbed on the end of the balcony, her hands steadily wrapping around his torso as her small feet hugged his waist and she was uncertain in her little and skaky movements.

"Like this?" Her small voice was very muffled in your ears due to the partial loss of hearing in your left ear causing most sounds too small to be perceived to be ignored by your eardrums, so you had to make sure to force yourself to listen carefully whenever she opened her mouth to speak.

"Yes, yes - whatever. Just hold on, because I'm not catching you if you fall." The raven still had his deadpan on even though the girl had wrapped all of her limbs around his torso like an ivy and it was probably uncomfortable for him. When he grabbed the handles of his maneuver gear and his thumbs settled over the buttons at the top for releasing the hooks of his 3DMG, he looked at you and shortly stated: "You follow, (L/N). And don't fall behind."

With that short phrase he was off - thumbs pressing down onto the small buttons as his hooks flew off of the building and got back into their place in the machine. In a matter of seconds you would be most likely left behind. You quickly restored an amount of power enough for you to use your maneuver gear properly until you go back to your squad and unhooked your wires from the building - pressing hard the gas lever at the front of the handle and speeding off after your superior as the girl's head poked from behind his shoulder and she stared at you with a small smile the whole time as you flew a little behind them.
