How can I say this without breaking?

How can I say this without taking over?

How can I put it down into words,

when it's almost too much for my soul alone?

"You are an idiot, aren't you?" Your eyes widened and you spun around slowly, trying not to cringe. You knew you'd get into trouble despite not being a cadet anymore if the Lance Corporal found you out. Well, he did. "Stealing isn't your forte. Reason yourself now or handle kitchen duty for the next month." The raven spoke calmly with his hands crossed in front of his chest. You dropped the three loaves of bread you'd been holding and looked at the floor with pursed lips. You didn't know how he'd react if you actually explained the situation to him.

"It's not for me." You blurted out, but his facial expression didn't change in the least, he just decided to let you talk. "Come with me?" You suggested uncertainly, making the lance corporal sigh as his eyes briefly closed.

"Lead the way."

I loved,

and I loved,

and I lost you.

And it hurts like hell.

The raven-haired man glanced at the alley between the houses in the town centre, scowling at the dark narrow space with gunmetal irises. You looked at him and then at the alley before calling out. Your words echoed for a second between the brick walls, but less than five seconds later footsteps rung along the muddy ground and arrived at the very corner of the houses.

Three children stood in front of you and Levi under the moonlight. Each one was small, frail and extremely dishevelled, but their eyes shone with curiosity and innocence. You smiled and crouched down, beckoning the kids over to yourself. They left the secluded darkness of the alley warily before going to your side and returning your smile with some of their own.

Levi watched the scene unfold in the middle of the night, understanding the reasoning behind your theft even before you voiced it out. He guessed you'd been the one stealing from the supplies every week for the past three months.

"It's for them." You said with an expression clear of any malice, making Levi sigh again. "I found them three months ago when we were coming back from an expedition and decided to---"

"Take care of them as if you actually possess the recourses to?" Levi cut you off, making you frown lightly at him.

"Should I have left them to the rats and drunkards then?"

The corporal didn't respond for the next few seconds. The only audible sound that escaped his lips was the click of his tongue as he turned his back to you and the children. He heard how you apologised for not bringing anything tonight. He listened to your explanation of who he was and the fact that you'd probably be unable to bring them any food in the future. The clear voices of the kids fell on his ears as well as they reassured you that everything was going to be fine.

He noted how that was something like a role reversal. Then he opened his mouth to speak.

"Come, (L/N), we're going to get them something better than a loaf of bread and tomorrow morning I'll discuss the matter of letting them live in the HQ with Erwin." The sound of your genuine laughter as you and the kids cheered was something that gave his soul a bit of happiness.
