Red String Of Fate [Levi | Reader | Soulmate AU!]

"You've heard the stories, right?"

"About the red string of fate, correct?"

"Indeed. You know about it?"

"It connects two soulmates once they both turn five years old. Only one is able to see it. There are no people without soulmates or with more than one. Did I miss anything?"

"When your soulmate dies the string turns black and can never be traced back to its source, it becomes endless."

"Ah, yeah. I hope I never get to witness it get black."

"Oh, you're the one that sees it?"

"Yeah, have been able ever since I turned five, must mean my soulmate's either the same age as me or older."

"I hope you find them. Do you plan to follow the string to them?"

"... not for now. If it was meant to be, I'll surely meet them. I don't plan wasting energy on it."

"You don't want to find out your soulmate?"

"It's a dreadful experience for me. What if it's one of them?"

"... you're partly right. They all die fast."

"Yes, I don't want to meet them and realise they might just die the next day. Also, a relationship would be impossible."

"I agree. Well, you can at least see your string."

"I imagine it'd be easier for you, you're the one that's in oblivion."

"Maybe so, but not having a way of knowing anything is a bit discouraging, y'know. If one day somebody comes and tells me they're my soulmate I can't know if they're lying or not, or if I constantly pass them on the street but they just don't want anything to do with the system so they ignore me, I won't even know for god's sake! It's not the best being the one without the red-string-vision."

"Yeah, but it's not the best being the one with it either. Imagine I trace it to my soulmate and I find that they're in a relationship. They could've been manipulated into believing somebody else is their soulmate or simply denying this whole system - I get to live the rest of my life knowing that they don't want me. Also, watching the string grow black at one point - I may not know the person or worse - I may've already met them and fallen in love and it would break me because I'll have to live with it."

"Well, both sides have their pros and cons. But I have a question."

"Shoot."

"Can you actually see others' strings?"

"Others' strings?"

"Well, y'know - I once read in a book that the soulmate who can see their red string is also able to see others' red strings, but is forbid to tell others who they lead to. So, is it true? Can you see my string for example?"

"I actually do see it. I can even give you an example - that married couple at the market stall? They're soulmates."
