Thump, thump, thump.

A pair of grey orbs met (e/c) ones across the hallway, the male narrowed his eyes at the female that tilted her head at him curiously and he passed her with a nonchalant step. He didn't see how she opened her mouth to call out to him, but then closed it.

Thump, thump, thump.

He handed her the stack of papers and their fingers brushed against one another, making her quickly yank her hand back. His eyebrows furrowed and he looked up to meet her gaze. He could bet she was red in the face due to the sudden physical contact that had been created and a groan almost left his lips as he ordered her to exit his office and deliver the documents next door. With a curt nod she left, never seeing how he glanced at his fingertips with curiosity before snorting and grabbing his pencil back in hand.

Thump--- thump.

When he looked up from his food his eyes locked on her instead. Plain (h/c) hair fell upon her shoulders as her bright (e/c) eyes bore into her friend and her thin rosy lips stretched out in a smile as her companion said something funny. Levi couldn't see what was so alluring about her that all male cadets liked.

But somehow, he saw something about her that he himself liked.

Having detected the gaze on the back of her head, the female looked behind her and met his grey orbs. Slowly, her grin fell from her face, but her eyes smiled his way more than he could comprehend. And when he considered finally looking away, a small, almost invisible smile crawled across her lips. He knew it was meant for him.

Thump, thump, thump, thump.

In the middle of the night he had no other job than to throw things left and right, anger enveloping his whole being. He was in the mess hall, he was sure he wouldn't be heard. He grabbed something - anything, and sent it flying across the room and into the wall - the sound of crashing filled his ears and made him a bit calmer. He continued raging until he felt he had no energy left, he slumped down on a near bench and put his face in his hands while desperately trying to chase away the burning feeling at the corners of his eyes.

"Why does everyone keep fucking dying?!" He screamed as his fists slammed into the wooden table and a crack resonated in the otherwise empty space. He hissed and continued throwing punches at the table without even detecting the opening of the door behind his back.

Soon, a gentle touch settled on his shoulder and he turned around abruptly to scream at the person, whoever they were, but he was stopped before he could even open his mouth. She looked at him pleadingly and he gave up before he even fought back, letting her do whatever she wanted.

He felt her hands on his face, caressing his cheeks and wiping away the clear substance that poured out of his eyes. She sat next to him and he avoided looking into her eyes, but she said nothing. He sniffled and she gave him a small smile when he finally met her gaze. She softly muttered his name before going closer to him and wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him into her embrace gently.

He closed his eyes and breathed in her scent - he could hear her heart beating.

Thump, thump.

He stared at her hands as they dragged the pencil across the paper and wrote, but silence stood in the air. She looked at him and her hand stopped moving only to then place the pencil on the desk. Her gaze met his and they both exhaled when he pretended not to have looked her way. She frowned and went to his side, sitting next to him. He felt her hand slide in his, intertwine her fingers with his and affectionately roll her fingertips over the back of his palm. He slowly leaned towards her and placed his head on her shoulder, feeling somehow calmer than before.

She kissed the top of his head with a grin on her lips before saying: "I love you."

He heard himself sigh before he reponded. "I don't want to love you. I'll end up hurting us both." He muttered calmly and her laughter graced his ears. He almost moved his head away from her shoulder as to look at her face and ask her what was so funny about his words.

"You're a fool if you think you will keep me safe if you isolate your feelings. You just hurt us both by denying it." She stated and he gave her a snort while lifting his head off her shoulder and meeting her gaze.

"You'll die one day."

She gave him a tender smile.

"Death comes to all of us. Let's make our time before it comes worthwhile."

He couldn't resist the urge of kissing her right then and there.

"Let's." He muttered before placing his lips upon hers and feeling how her fingers squeezed his hand.

Thump.

He looked into her eyes once more, he knew he was panicking and so was she. But really he was fine with it, he didn't mind it, she was the one that probably had something to say on the matter. He saw her wide (e/c) eyes stare at him like a deer in headlights, he saw her hands as they grasped his body and pulled him up, he saw her mouth as it twitched and spoke his name, he saw her tears as they streamed down her face.

Really, he was fine with it.

Crimson stuck to her fingers as she glided them across his cheekbones, grasping his face and trying to shake him, bring him back. She screamed and cried as he lay there, content with what he'd done before death got to him. Content with how he got her before death got to him.

He was fine.
