-Niall's POV-
"Niall babe. Wake up." Mackenzie said again, shoving my shoulder gently. I groaned and rolled over, shoving her off of me.
"Go away!" I slurred, my voice low and tired from just waking up.
"Aww......why you want me to go away...?" Mackenzie cooed, playing with a piece of my hair. I kept my eyes snapped closed tightly, determined to stay asleep.
"Cause I wanna sleep..." I mumbled. She huffed and gently kissed my neck. I felt her slowly move over so she hovered over top of me. I felt her hair fall across my face, so I wrinkled my nose at the tickling feeling it made.
"Niall....you know you have to go to the doctor today...." she whispered, leaning down next to my ear. I felt goosebumps rise on my skin as I felt her leave a kiss underneath my ear, before nibbling on it, slowly and.....painfully. It wasn't like..actual pain....but you know what I mean.
I bit down on the inside of my cheek as hard as I could without breaking the skin. She giggled quietly into my ear and I opened my eyes, sliding my hands into her hair. She sat up slightly, moving her lips away from my neck and meeting my eyes. Her hair fell into my face and she moved it, pushing it over her shoulder. My hands slid out of it and she smiled, looking down at me.
"I don't wanna......" I whined, sticking my bottom lip out and pouting. she shook her head, her lips curling into a small smile.
"Oh...it won't be that bad..." she mumbled. Her eyes showed some pain and..regret...as if she didn't want to go either. I let her gently brush my hair out of my face with her fingertips.
"Baby....I'm sorry...." I whispered, brushing my fingers through her always soft, curly hair. I felt.....bad....putting this on her. She was always worried about me, but never herself...which made me worried. She never seemed to care if she was...cutting herself.....she didn't care how it was affecting her. She didn't seem to care about the marks all over her body. She wasn't afraid that one day...she'd cut too deep. She wasn't afraid....of any of that. She was only afraid for me, which made me afraid for her.
"For what Niall .....? You didn't do..anything...." she whispered, kissing my cheek and sitting up. I sighed, rubbing my eyes tiredly. She smiled down at me, before running and hand through her hair quickly and looking out the window at something which caught her attention. Jesse layed on the edge of the bed, sleeping, his snoring quietly radiating throughout the room.
"I'm sorry you have to deal with this....I know.....how...what goes on in your mind Mackenzie....and I know you should be worried about yourself. Not me....." I trailed off quietly. She slowly sat up, sitting between my legs on her knees. Her eyes were scared at the thought of me seeing inside her mind. Her hands started shaking and she put them down on her knees, clasping them together tightly to stop it. I sighed and sat up, bending my eyes as she looked up at me, her eyes shut off to me, making me unable to read her expression. Fear? Denial? Hurt? I couldn't tell if my life depended on it.
"Niall........I'll be fine.....I always am..." she trailed, looking down at her hands. I sighed, reaching out my hand to brush my fingers against her cheek, letting my thumbs rub her cheekbones. She closed her eyes and leaned into my touch, sighing and grabbing my hands in hers tightly. I could see her face visibly relax.....as she kept her eyes closed, not saying another word.
I sighed suddenly and unexpectedly, dropping my hand from her face, her eyes fluttering open. "What time is my appointment?" I sighed. A small smile broke out on her lips, making my heart soar to see her smile.
"9:00" she whispered, bringing my hands up to her lips to kiss my knuckles like she always does. I made eye contact with her as she did so and wondered....where did she learn to do that?
"Hey baby?" I whispered, rubbing my thumb against her hand as she lowered our intertwined hands from her lips.
"Yeah?"
"When did you start doing that?" I whispered. Her eyes were confused for a second.
"Do what?" She asked, her voice tired.
"This." I whispered, pulling her hand up so I could kiss her knuckles, just as she had done to me minutes before. Her eyes softened and I saw some pain flash in them momentarily before tears welled up in her eyes as she looked away from me, pulling her hand away. She shifted as if she was uncomfortable and looked away, swiping at her eyes as I watched a few tears fall off her lashes. "I didn't mean to make you cry...." I whispered and she chuckled a bit, laughing through her tears.
"I'm sorry. Gosh....I'm so emotional as of late.....ummm....my dad. Used to..do that all the time to me....even to Josh.....I don't know why...I must've picked it up from him I guess......" she whispered. I nodded as she moved her legs and slid off the bed, her feet hitting the floor with a thump. She padded over to the desk and pulled the drawer open. I saw the cover of her diary and she took it out, making my heartbeat quicken. Please not today. I silently begged with her. She shook her head as she looked back at me, before coming back over and sitting in front of me again. She flipped the diary to its back, before ripping off one of the stickers that was on the back and pulling back a secret compartment in the diary. I was astonished. How did I not notice that before?
She grunted as she pried the thick cover open. I was scared that she was going to break it, but she didn't, as if she'd done this a million times. She probably has.
She gently pulled it open and slipped out a small picture. A picture of her family again. But this one..it was easier to see them. It was a closer picture.....one when she was small, her brother stood next to her, his dark hair and blueish greenish eyes gleaming as he laughed. Mackenzie stood in the middle, a little girl only. Probably about five or six only. Her mother stood next to her, a smile on her lips and her arms around her kids. Her father stood behind Mackenzie, hugging her from behind. His smile was just like Mackenzie's and his eyes were an exact replica, making me do a double take.
Her hands shook and I smiled as she handed the picture to me. I held it and brushed my fingers over her small, baby smile. It was an incredibly cute picture and it almost made me cry, thinking how she doesn't have a family anymore. She gently pulled something else out and I saw a small necklace, the one that a boy would wear. It was a cross and it was silver and shiny, glinting in the light coming in from the window. She slowly put it around her neck and closed her eyes, touching it with her fingertips.
"I love you. I'll be your family now." I whispered, pulling her to sit in my lap. She didn't cry, or resist me. Just buried her face into my chest, seeking the safety of my arms once again. She breathed in and out deeply, letting her breath hit my neck. She wrapped her legs around my torso and kissed my neck once. Just a light peck. She sighed and sat up, wiping her eyes out, even though there were no tears in her eyes. I watched as she turned away from me, keeping her eyes closed tightly, as if she was going to cry. I gently reached out and turned her head so she would face me. Her eyes fluttered open and she stared at me, her eyes watering. She reached out her shaky hand and touched her fingers to my lips, sending shivers up my spine and throughout my body. Her fingers rested on my lips as she rubbed her thumbs over them.
Light was coming through the window, shining around her hair, making her look like she was sent straight from heaven down to me. My Angel.
Her reddish brownish hair was in soft curls around her head and it was soft against my fingers as I slowly picked up a curl, twirling it between my fingers. Her eyes remained fixated on mine and I stared back, feeling the insane intensity in the room. Her green eyes were tired, but yet, awake. She suddenly looked away, looking down at her hands.
"We should go. " she whispered, leaning forward to kiss my forehead. I smiled and nodded slowly, sliding her off my lap. She sighed and got up, sidestepping Jesse and going into the bathroom without another word. I sighed and grabbed the diary in my hands, before standing up and putting it back into the desk drawer. I took the picture of her family and put that next to it, before shutting the drawer with a light click.-Mackenzie's POV-
I shut the door to the bathroom and slumped against it, letting it support my weight as I raised my hand up to my forehead. I felt my headache growing and walked over to the counter, leaning on it and looking into the mirror.
My eyes were slightly puffy and my hair was a messy, curls everywhere. I sighed and grabbed my glasses off the counter, making my vision less blurry.
I got glasses while me and Niall were separated....the eye doctor said my eyes were under a lot of stress from all the late night reading and writing I was doing.....so...now I have glasses. Might as well just dye my hair back to blonde. Then Niall and I will be twins. Cute? Maybe. Annoying? Most definitely.
"Kenzie....? Baby? Y...you okay?" Niall's voice came through the door. I remembered that I had been standing there for awhile.
I sighed and looked at the door. "Oh. Yeah. Yeah. You can come in." I said tiredly as I turned on the water and brought it up to my face, splashing it with ice cold water. I felt hands go around my waist and I grabbed a towel off the counter, drying my face on it.
"How are you..holding up?" Niall whispered in my ear, bringing goosebumps to my skin. I shrugged and put some lotion on my face while he watched. He was already dressed and brushing his teeth by the time I was done in the bathroom. I left my contacts out and my glasses on with no makeup, as I didn't feel good enough to put it on. I didn't want to take the time.
"Ready?" Niall asked as I walked out of the bathroom. I nodded quickly and he smiled nervously, wiping his sweaty hands on his pants.
I smiled gently and grabbed his hand, pulling him out the door. He grabbed the keys to the car, but I reached out and grabbed them out of his dangerously shaky hand.
"No you don't." I said, pulling him outside. He shrugged as if I was crazy.
"What?!" He asked, sounding overly defensive. I laughed and shook my head, getting into the drivers side of his car. He got in the passenger side and looked at me expectantly.
"No way I'm letting you drive when you're this nervous." I said as I started the car and backed out. I pulled on to the road and Niall scoffed.
"If we both die, because of your crazy ass driving....I'm blaming you." Niall said, looking out the window as I drove. I smiled and shook my head.
"And why.....May I ask....would we die?" I laughed. He took my hand in his and squeezed it playfully. I'm pretty sure he was just bickering with me because he wanted to distract himself from thinking about what could possibly or what would happen at the hospital.
"Duh!! Yer not the best driver love...." he said, a hint of his infectious smile in his voice. I turned a bit to see the smirk on his face.
"Hey!! Don't blame me!! You never let me drive!!" I defended and he burst out laughing.
"Thats because....I don' wanna die!!!" He laughed. I smiled, shaking my head as I pulled into the parking lot and parked in a space.
"You ready?" I asked as I turned off the car. Niall dropped my hand suddenly and kneaded his hands together, looking up at me nervously. I glanced at his hands as he played with the oxygen tube coming out of his nose. He suddenly looked at me and pouted, his blue eyes getting bigger. Oh no. The puppy eyes....
"Kenzi.....I don't wanna...." he whined. I laughed quietly and leaned over to kiss his cute lips.
"You're cute....and I'd absolutely love to drive you straight home and seriously rip all clothing off your body....." I trailed, smiling at the blush that crept up onto his face. "But...as much as I'd love to do that...you promised me you'd come...and...we have put it off long enough.....so come on." I said. He pouted again and I smiled.
"But baby....." he whined and I giggled, getting out of the car.
"Won't work. Are you coming or do I have to drag you?" I asked as I slammed the door. I watched Niall's face falter as he opened the door slowly and got out, dragging the oxygen behind him. He groaned and trudged over to me, practically dragging his feet. I grabbed his free hand and swung our hands back and forth, trying to get him to smile. It didn't work.
"Love you..." I said teasingly, poking his side. He huffed as I watched him try to suppress a smile. His lips tugged up and he shook his head, rolling his eyes.
"I'm sure...." he trailed sarcastically, nudging me with his shoulder. We entered the hospital, with me practically dragging him like a child.
