Scott and I walked into the main dining room and we both froze. The grand staircase was beautiful and the clock at the top was something that came from the gods themselves. The banister was polished to the most perfect shine that I had ever seen. From the bottom of the stairs, where I had wandered, the skylight let so much light in and the levels above me shone from the polish and I felt like a royal. I spun in the middle and looked at Scott who was just as struck as I was.
"This is what they live with?" Scott asked as he walked towards me.
"This what we have to live with," I said as we looked up at the skylight and we both sighed.
"I might never get use to this," he said and I took his hand.
"Scott, Mae, I'm glad you two can join me for dinner tonight," Thomas said. We looked at him and he gave us a small smile as he walked over to us. We both watched as he got closer to us and I took Scott's arm.
"Thank you for inviting us to dinner," Scott said as we all started walking to a table that was set up for a full dinner for three people. Scott pulled out the chair for me and I sat down on the chair with Scott's help.
"We will be having a traditional dinner that will be served on the voyage. I figured that this way you both can practice for behaviour and taste of the food," Thomas said as he took a seat across from me.
"I think that will help both of us," Scott said as he took the seat next to me and touched my hand. I smiled at him and Thomas caught my eye as he smiled to himself about what I can only assume was way that Scott and I were acting.
"Mr. Andrews," a server said as he put a bowl in front of us. It was filled with water and I looked at Scott. Scott gave a slight shrug and we looked at Thomas as he started to dip his fingers in the bowl. Scott and I followed suit and Thomas watched us as we did what he was doing.
"Very good. Now throughout the meal, do you know which utensil to use for which item?" Thomas asked. I looked at Scott and sighed.
"Outside in," Scott said as he looked at me. I nodded and he smiled at me as he reached for my hand after patting it dry.
"Okay. I can remember that," I whispered. Scott nodded and I folded my hands like I had seen first class ladies do during dinners.
"I don't know much about either one of you," Thomas said. I looked at Scott and he looked back at me.
"And we don't know much about each other either," Scott said as he looked at Thomas again.
"Well, Mae how about you tell us more about you?" Thomas asked. I felt my face warm up as I looked at my lap.
"There is nothing to tell about me. I just have been working in newspaper printers for as long as I can remember," I said.
"Well, when is your birthday?" Scott asked.
"On the 15th of April," I said.
"Your birthday is in 12 days? Well we should have a small party for that date," Thomas said. I shook my head.
"There is no need for a party on that date," I said as Scott nodded and smiled at me.
"Well, of course there is. It's my fiancée's nineteenth birthday. It is only proper your fiancé does something for your birthday," Scott said. I smiled and laughed a little as I realised that Scott was holding up his side of the deal.
"Well, if my fiancé insists on a small party for my birthday then who am I to say no since he has a reputation to protect and if he seems like he forgot about my birthday, what would that say about him?" I asked.
"Well, I did take you on the ship of your dreams for your birthday," he said. I smiled at him and he laughed as he leaned back in the chair.
"You two seem like the perfect couple," Thomas said. I looked at Thomas and smiled at him as we all received our first course of the meal.
"We are just learning how to be friends," I stated and Scott gave Thomas a small nod that made me feel like I was supported by the man that I knew that I was going to marry.
"That is an... interesting approach," Thomas said. I smiled and Scott shrugged. I
"Sometimes you can't follow what the first class wishes but what you feel in your soul," Scott said as he started to eat his first course. I followed and Thomas watched us as we took our first few bites before joining in.
"Mae, where were you raised?" Thomas asked. Scott looked over at me as I swallowed my food. I looked at Thomas as he continued to eat.
"A tenant in London. The slums aren't as bad as people like to make them. You just have to know where to go and how to deal with the men there," I said. I was proud that I came from the slums of London and that I knew how to deal with my home and ten roommates that all shared one room.
"The slums are usually harsh," Thomas said as I took another bite. "And you Scott? Where were you raised?"
"New York City until I was fifteen then I joined the first of many sea crews I would be on and I've been on the sea ever since then," Scott said as he looked at me.
"That is very unique for a first class couple," Thomas said. We looked at Thomas as he continued to eat the course in front of him. Scott and I exchanged a look and we realised that he was basically telling us that we needed to come up with a more reasonable reason of how we were raised.
"We like unique things. Call it a third class flair," Scott said as he gave a small smile that showed that he liked challenging Thomas which made me want to laugh.
