I sat on the vanity chair as Emma got a large pink hat to put on the hair do that she did so elegantly. I looked at my makeup and how I was dressed but I didn't see the Mae Morgan that I grew up with but a new Mae Morgan. One that was refined and respected by the society instead of the one that went to art school during the day then worked in the factory at night to help her father.
"Emma, are you happy?" I asked. Emma stopped fixing my hair under the hat as she looked into the mirror to look at me.
"Miss Morgan, I don't understand what you mean," she said. I looked at the vanity table.
"Are you happy working for Scott and myself?" I asked. She looked at me around the hat and I looked back at her.
"Miss, Mr. Sire and yourself are the kindest employers that I have ever had the pleasure working for. It doesn't matter that I have only been working for you for a little over a week. My old employer would have fired me if I was pregnant," she said. I smiled and nodded as she continued to fix my hat.
"Mae, are you almost ready? Church is in an hour," Scott said as he walked into the dressing room. I looked at him in the mirror as Emma stepped away from me.
"Emma? Are you finished or do you need more time?" I asked, softly. She looked up and nodded.
"I am finished, Miss Morgan. Enjoy church this morning. I hope that you enjoy your hair this morning," Emma said. I nodded and stood, facing Scott, who was handsome in his Sunday best suit.
"Thank you, Emma. Please enjoy your day," I told her as I looked over at her. She nodded and Scott offered his arm to me, which I took with my gloved hand. He smiled at me as I looked up at him and smiled.
"You look beautiful today, just like everyday," he said. I blushed and he walked to the sitting room then out the door.
"Scott, I feel like I am playing dress up in Mrs Freeman's closet again," I whispered as we walked down the hall. He laughed and used his free hand to touch the top of my hand.
"This is what I think it will feel like for a long time, Mae. Dress up until we watch our children play dress up in whatever is the fashion and we will have to tell them to stop," he said. I smiled at the thought.
"I will never tell them to stop playing dress up because we are one of the leading families now but I don't want them to believe that they have to be prime and proper in private," I told him and he smiled at me.
"You'll yell at us for playing on the floor and I will have to yell at them for playing dress up," he stated. I shook my head and he stopped.
"What is wrong?" I asked, looking at him.
"Mr. Sire?" Robert yelled, running after us. Scott shook his head and turned around to look at Robert.
"Yes, Robert?" Scott asked. Robert handed him my pencil box. Scott looked at me and I looked at Robert.
"Robert, can you please ask Emma to place this in my night coat pocket?" I asked as Scott handed it to me. Robert nodded and I smiled.
"I wanted to thank both you, actually. About Emma and our child. It means a lot for us that you are letting Emma keep her job and letting our child stay in your residence," Robert said. Scott smiled.
"Regardless of the gender of your child, they will also be tutored in the subjects by a private tutor," Scott said. Robert stared at him.
"Sir, Emma and I do not have the funds to tutor our child privately," Robert stated, timily. I looked at Scott to see where he was going with this but his response made me happier that I was the one by his side.
"I never said that you would be paying for it, Mr Swan," Scott said. Robert's face went slack and I looked at Scott with a large smile.
"Mr. Sire, I cannot thank you enough," Robert stuttered. I smiled at Robert and he nodded at me with the biggest smile that I had ever seen.
"I was the son of a maid and Miss Morgan was the daughter of a maid and a driver. If we can offer your child something that was not easily accessible to us as children, then we will give them it," Scott said and Robert nodded as he tried so hard to hold his composure in front of us.
"I don't know to thank you," Robert stated. Scott put his free hand back over mine as he started to turn.
"Don't thank us," Scott said as he started leading me away from Robert so we weren't late to church.
"Scott that was really polite for Robert and Emma," I stated. He smiled and shrugged.
"I just remember how hard it was growing up and I don't want their children growing up like that," he said which made me smile and lean into him a little bit.
"You are going to be the best boss for all the employees we may have," I told him and he patted my hand.
"Now, remember, we have to pray more today compared to any other time," he said. I raised an eyebrow at him.
"What is that?" I asked.
"We forgot last week and it is our first time going as an engaged couple in public," he said and I laughed as I held his arm tighter.
