I sat in the sitting room a quarter till eight, waiting for Scott to finish telling Robert and Emma directions about what was to occur tonight. I had my legs crossed as I continued to read Hamlet.
"Mae," Scott said. I closed my book and stood as Scott made his way to me. I smiled and he took my hands. He played with the engagement ring he gave me and I smiled at him which made him smile back.
"Let me fix your tie," I said as my hands found their way to his tie and I straightened out his tie. I fixed his collar and flattened his jacket shoulders. "Next time, make sure Robert has all of this fixed before you walk out," I said, making sure that Robert could hear me. Scott chuckled.
"You are really starting to sound like a first class woman," he whispered so I could hear.
"You were right. You and me, we are each other's new life and that means we have a new beginning which means I can be a new person which is showing that I have a brain and dominance over people in other classes," I whispered back. He smiled.
"That's true. We don't have to be walked on anymore," he said and I laughed as I took his arm.
"This is our new life as a couple and I'm not going to lose it because I love you," I said, blushing. He played with my fingers.
"And I'll make sure you don't lose it because I love you," he said. I smiled bigger and we walked to the door. He opened it for me and I lead the way to the elevator. As we got on we were face to face with the Astors.
"Mae!" Maddie exclaimed as she hugged me. I hugged her and John shook hands with Scott.
"Just our luck to run into our closest friends that are Titanic passengers," John said as he took Maddie's arm again.
"It's a very pleasant surprise indeed," I said as I held Scott's arm.
"Mae, I love your dress," Maddie said as she touched my light pink dress that matched my pink heels. Emma left a little bit of my curly hair down to frame my face.
"Thank you," I said. I adjusted my pink gloves and let my engagement ring shine in the light of the elevator.
"I must say, Scott, the engagement ring is simply yet elegant," John said as he observed my engagement ring. Scott smiled.
"Mae was a challenge to get by my side but I was able to bring her closer and showing off with what did you call it?" Scott asked. Oh, add to the story so they believe it more and like you've been courting me for a while.
"Material culture, something you Americans love to do. So many possessions," I said. He laughed.
"Very funny, love. But I knew that showing off with material culture would drive her away," Scott said.
"Why were, or rather still in Britain?" John asked. I looked at Scott.
"First, I was here on business and we met so I continued to write her when I returned home. I returned to properly court her and that took a year. Finally, she said yes a few weeks ago and agreed to return with me," Scott said.
"So you are newly engaged," Maddie stated. I blushed and hid in my shoulder.
"I would have never guessed the class difference but then again Mrs. Freeman did raise you the way any young lady should be raised," John said. I smiled.
"Thank you but Scott has taught me a lot more than I ever thought," I said, looking at Scott.
"Isn't it a man's duty to teach and respect his fiancée?" Scott asked. I smiled and looked at Maddie.
"He was so strong when he was trying to court me. And stubborn. He can't take no for an answer," I said as I studied Maddie's facial expressions.
"That's so sweet. John caught me the second he looked at me. There was no hope once we saw each other," Maddie said as she looked up at John.
"I wish we had that," Scott said as he pulled me slightly closer to him as the elevator stopped on the ninth floor. "But I'm glad that things happened the way they did." I smiled as a woman got on the elevator.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Mr and Mrs Astor," the woman said.
"Molly!" Maddie squealed as she hugged the woman. "How many times do I have to tell you to call me Maddie and my husband John?"
"Oh hush darling. Now don't think I didn't see you talking to these two young people," the woman who I figured name was Molly said as she looked at Scott and me. "Who are these young ones?"
"I'm Scott Sire and this is my fiancée, Miss Mae Morgan," Scott said. My heart did a little fluttering as he said fiancée and I liked the feeling of it. "And a lovely lady such as yourself must have an equally lovely name."
"Brown, Margaret Brown," she said.
"But we all call her Molly," Maddie piped up. I smiled and nodded.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Molly," I said. She waved her hand with a dismissive look on her face.
"Please, don't be so formal with me," Molly said. I looked at Scott.
"Well, Molly, you seem to know the Astors very well," Scott said.
"She is the fifth to our dinner tonight," John said. I felt my smile get bigger.
"I couldn't ask for better dinner company," I said as we reached the ground floor.
"Well then, shall we go to dinner?" John asked.
