Scott and I followed the Astors and Molly into the restaurant that was in the hotel. I stayed close to Scott as we walked to the waiter and John gave his name to the waiter who instantly took us to a rectangular table. Scott and John sat at either head of the table and Maddie and I took the proper spots on the right of our husband or fiancé. Molly sat next to Maddie and Scott touched my hand.
"So, what brings you two to London?" Molly asked as she looked at Scott and myself.
"Well, Mae wanted to visit London before I swept her off to America," Scott said.
"So, Mae, dear, you are European?" Molly asked. I smiled.
"I'm from London actually," I said, "The slums technically." Molly perked up.
"So you are what this born rich people call new money, huh?" Molly asked. I looked at Molly and I never felt so self conscious about my so-called 'third class-ness'.
"She may be new money, as you say but she had a rich soul," Scott said. Molly laughed.
"Don't be so defensive about your fiancée, Scotty," Molly said. Hm, I like that nickname. Scotty. "My husband stuck it rich in California so we are new money as well. Mae, I can help you with whatever you wish." I looked at Scott.
"That's very sweet of you, Molly. I'll be sure to remember that," I said.
"So do you two have a wedding date set yet?" Molly asked after we ordered our wines or champagne. I looked at Scott with a small furrowed brow.
"They just got in engaged a few weeks ago, Molly. Don't be pressuring the young children," Maddie scolded.
"Madeleine, you are no older than they are. John on the other hand, I think we are too old to be with this young crowd," Molly said, earning laugher from the group.
"Now, Molly, you best be changing your thinking about how old you are. I see that you aren't a day over twenty," Scott said. Molly laughed and hit Scott on the arm.
"Mae, make sure you hold on to that man because he is so darn sweet. I am a twenty year old with grandchildren on your fiancée's logic," Molly said. I giggled and squeezed Scott's hand.
"He has a way with words," I said thinking about a few hours before when Scott told me why I would return to London.
"Regardless of the fact that you barely listen to me," Scott said as his flawless smile graced an appearance to my eyes. I nodded.
"A woman is to see through her man's silver tongue," I said.
"I have never heard truer words," Molly said.
"I know that's true," Maddie commented, glancing at her husband.
"I do not have a silver tongue, my love. What I have is doting servitude to my fiancée," he said.
"That is debatable," Molly said as the first course came.
"Men do not trick the women of the world. In fact, we assist them in their public affairs," John said. Scott and I looked at Maddie who nodded. I looked at Molly who took a deep breath.
"To a certain degree, I believe that is true," Molly said. I looked at Scott.
"I disagree. Mae has befriended Captain E.J Smith and Mr. Thomas Andrews by herself," Scott said. I looked at him, keeping my face impassive.
"Captain E.J Smith and Mr. Thomas Andrews? As in the captain and architect of the Titanic?" Maddie asked.
"Yes. I actually drew Captain E.J Smith just two days ago and I promised Thomas that I would draw him before we dock in America," I said.
"Scott and you are going on the Titanic with John and Maddie here?" Molly asked.
"Yes ma'am. I figured that what is better way of showing my fiancée that I care for her so deeply than taking her on the ship that she watched get built and wrote to me about how it made dreams real. Of course she had hard logic and realised the threat of the Titanic if it sinks but everyone in the world wants to go on a Titanic voyage," Scott said. I smiled at him and he touched my hand.
"Now, if only my husband thought the same way you do, Scott," Molly said. I took a bite of the food. "He lost all romance after we got married."
"We will have to see if he keeps this up after we get married. I hope he does," I said. I turned to looked at Scott completely and the necklace caught the light which caught Molly's attention.
"What is this?" Molly asked as she leaned across the table a little as she looked at the necklace. I touched the necklace.
"My necklace? The woman that helped raise me gave it to me today. It is something that she use to wear everyday and I was always looking at it. She gave it to me for my birthday," I said as I smiled and looked at the necklace.
"Birthday? Is it today?" Molly asked.
"No, she turns nineteen on the fifteenth of this month," Scott said.
"We simply must get them to sing that happy birthday song," Molly said.
"Oh no, Molly. It's quite okay. Can we just enjoy our dinner?" I asked as I looked at the table.
"Its after dinner so it's quite okay," Molly said.
"Yes, we must. Molly isn't going on the Titanic so we simply must celebrate tonight with Molly," Maddie said. I shook my head and looked at Scott. Everyone started talking about it and telling the server without any care in the world, except Scott.
"Are you okay?" Scott asked me.
"No, I don't want to really celebrate my birthday. I only agreed to the party because of Mr. Ismay," I whispered so the trio getting me a cake wouldn't hear.
"Just brave through it and I promise we will deal with it. Together," he told me. I nodded with a small smile.
"Okay."
