We spent hours on the lifeboat and Emma threw up maybe a dozen times but it made me want to throw up as well. Scott rubbed my back as I watched the sky line. The silence was back even after we got ourselves tied to lifeboat 17. I was so tired and hungry from hours of no sleep and no food.
"Mae, go to sleep," Scott whispered, laying my head on his lap and I did, knowing Scott would make sure that I was okay.

"Mae, wake up. Wake up Mae. The rescue ship is here," Scott said as he shook me away. I opened my eyes and saw a ship right next to us. I sat up and rubbed my eyes as Emma walked to the rope ladder that was over the edge of the ship.
"Who is it?" I asked as Scott helped me stand up and walk behind Robert. Scott rubbed my arms and I watched as Robert climbed up slowly after Emma was about half way up. Other than Officer Pitman, we were the last people on the lifeboat.
"The Carpathia. We were lucky that it was this close," Officer Pitman said. Scott looked at him and shook his head.
"But not close enough to save more lives," Scott said, "Mae, it is time to go up yourself." I looked up and took a deep breath. I grabbed the rungs and stepped up. I felt Scott's hands on my waist as I went up the first of the rungs.
"I got you, miss," a man said as he grabbed my arm and helped me over the railing. I looked around as the man lifted me and all I saw was sadness as people tried to give each other names and separate to class.
"Mae, are you okay?" Scott asked as he came up behind me. I nodded and an officer came up to us.
"Miss, may I take your lifebelt?" the officer asked. I looked down and nodded.
"Yes, of course," I said as we walked to the center. Scott grabbed my arm and untied my lifebelt. He pulled it over my head and handed it to the officer. I waited until Scott held my arm and made our way to the first class deck.
"We are going to find some breakfast," he told me and I smiled as he walked with a sort of dignified destroyed confidence that I only seen my father walk after my mother passed away.
"Scotty! Over here!' Molly yelled as we walked onto the first class deck. Scott headed their way and I took in that I only saw Maddie and Molly.
"Was JJ with you?" Maddie asked as she stood up and I looked at her. I looked at Scott, who shook his head.
"I am so sorry, Maddie. We haven't seen him," I said as Emma and Robert walked up behind us. Maddie started crying harder and I looked at Scott.
"Oh my, thank God you all are okay," Elisabeth said. I smiled at her as she walked over Mrs Robert and Georgette.
"Was Mr Astor with you?" I asked them. The trio looked between themselves and shook their heads.
"We're sorry but we haven't seen him since the reception room last night," Mrs Robert said and Maddie looked at her lap.
"We didn't see you two in the confusion," Georgette said, looking at us. Elisabeth smacked her arm.
"We do not state things like that," Elisabeth scolded. Scott and I exchanged a look.
"It's quite okay. An officer put us on a lifeboat together and lowered us before anyone knew what was going on," Scott said.
"How did you get so lucky?" Molly asked. I looked at Scott.
"I was friends with all the officers on board," Scott whispered. "Oh God. Excuse me ladies." He walked off and I tracked him with my eyes.
"Excuse me," I said, running after him. "Scott!" I caught his arm and he looked at me. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"We only got on that lifeboat by the fact that the officers all knew me and knew that they could get me in the lifeboat," he said as he looked at the ground.
"Would you have done the same thing?" I asked. He looked up.
"I don't know. If it was Harold, maybe. He is my best friend," he said.
"He is doing the same thing that you would have done. You can't blame yourself," I told him. He sighed and looked out to the water.
"I should have stayed to help with the loading of the lifeboats," he stated.
"Then I would have stayed with you until you got on a lifeboat," I stated. "I promised you that I would never leave you and I keep my promises." He looked at me and I stood my ground.
"It is something that I won't forgive myself for. I couldn't save more people," he stated and I hugged him because I knew that it's what he needed.
"It's okay," I whispered but I think it was more for me than it was for him as we stood in the middle of all the tears and sadness that was on the ship.
