Scott pulled out his watch and looked at it. I looked over at the watch and read the time. 1:05 in the morning. I was hungry but I wasn't about to tell anyone and that was kinda hard when everyone still aboard the ship finally realised what was going on and half of the lifeboats were already gone.
The water had reached over the bow and was starting to pull the ship down. The stern was slightly out of the water and everyone was panicing on the deck of the ship which made the fear inside of me grow.
"I can't believe that the crew didn't tell any of us that the ship was sinking," a man said. I knew who he was from the chatter on the lifeboat that he was Richard Beckwith. I leaned on Scott's shoulder and watched the fear that was growing on the Titanic.
"Would you have believed them? If someone came up to you and told you that the ship was sinking, would you have believed them?" Scott asked, not looking back at the other people on our lifeboat.
"We were told that the ship was unsinkable!" Mr. Behr exclaimed. "Not that it seems to matter to you. Look at you all calm."
"My husband is on the ship!" the mother yelled. She was Ruth Dodge and her son was Washington but I didn't exactly care all that much.
"Your husband chose not to be aboard this lifeboat," Officer Pitman stated and I looked at Scott again, who was still staring at the ship for the longest that he has since we got on the lifeboat.
"I don't see him too upset. He doesn't have anything to lose," Mr Behr said as he pointed at Scott and I held Scott's hand as he clenched his hand.
"All due respect, Mr Behr, but you are not the only on this boat that doesn't have much to lose either," Scott said, finally looking at Mr Behr. Mr Behr stared at Scott before he stood up but Scott just turned around to look at the TItanic again.
"A true man would fight his battles," Mr Behr stated. Scott laughed and shook his head.
"The water is a few degrees below freezing. I could easily get you in the water. You won't be dying of drowning but more than likely hypothermia," Scott said.
"What is that suppose to mean?" Mr Behr asked and Scott shook his head.
"It means that right now it doesn't matter what either of us believes because the way that I see it, you don't have anything to lose either. Now, we all need to work together to stay alive. We are nearly thirty people short of a full lifeboat and guess what? We can't change that now because if we go back, we will be thrown into the water as well," Scott said as he stood up. I stood and held on to Scott's arm.
"Scotty, let's sit down and just forget about this. We have to worry about staying alive for right now," I whispered and Scott kept his eyes on Mr Behr.
"Some men are not truly men, are they?" Mr Behr asked the lifeboat. Scott went to go for him but I held him back.
"A man also remembers when he can fight and when he needs to shut up," I stated, looking at Mr Behr.
"Are you letting a woman do the talking for you now, Scott?" Mr Behr asked. I looked at Mr Behr and put my hands on my hips.
"Listen here, you b*****d, we let this lifeboat get lower below the minimum and I am willing to believe that old money members, like you, will not let the other classes on the lifeboats that are on the deck that you think are yours. Half the people on that ship are dying tonight and there is nothing that we can do," I stated.
"Why do you assume that half of the people are going to die tonight?" Ruth asked. I shook my head as I looked back at the ship, who's fate was determined.
"Any ship close to us won't want to navigate through the iceberg field and any ship that can come won't make it in the two hours that we need to save every person on that ship," I said as I pointed back to the ship. I turned completely back around to look at the Titanic and I sat back down.
"How do you know that?" Ruth asked. I turned around and looked at every single person in the lifeboat.
"What you consider new money are able to think, independently, of men and I am the one that did the math that told the captain how long he has to get everyone off the ship," I stated and then turned back around. Scott sat back down next to me and I felt the boat rock as Mr Behr sat back down.
"You know that you don't have to waste your time on these men who don't think," Scott whispered to me and I looked at my lap.
"We don't have time for people to act like idiots," I said as I watched another boat get lowered to the water. If I had to guess in that moment based on where we were launched, I thought it was lifeboat number 1.
"No one else will act like an idiot if we can help it and right now, we need to stay warm," Scott said and untied his lifebelt.
"What are you doing?" I asked as he took it off of his chest. He looked around and his eyes stopped on Ruth, who didn't have a lifebelt on.
"Ruth, put this on," Scott said and Ruth took the lifebelt as Scott sat back down next to me as he grabbed the edge of his coat and wrapped me inside his coat.
