By the last course, the men were laughing aloud and I covered my mouth as I laughed with them. The men did most of the talking while just listened. As much as I enjoyed Scott's company and Thomas and Captain Smith were polite to me, I wished there was a woman I could relate to.
"Gentlemen, would you like to join me in the smoking room?" Mr. Ismay asked. The dignified men all stood and then Scott, who realised what was going on.
"Are you going to be okay, Mae?" Scott asked as he kissed my cheek. I was kinda shocked that he kissed my cheek but then again we had our deal.
"I will be fine. Good dirty the new smoking room," I said and Scott nodded as he started walking off with the three men. I stood and started towards the suite. I opened the door and Emma and Robert both jumped up. I realised what was going on. "Oh! My apologises!" I exclaimed as I tried to leave.
"Miss Morgan! That isn't your fault. We should have waited until we had finished with work," Robert said. I nodded and Emma, although she was still very flustered came over to me.
"Miss Morgan, would you like me to help you change out of your dress?" Emma asked. I shook my head.
"No, I just need my jacket and I will be leaving for a while," I said. I wanted to go to the Saloon Deck and just look around.
"Of course Miss Morgan," Emma said. She walked to the closet and grabbed one of the evening jackets that had fur on the edge. She helped me put it on and I walked to the front.
"You two have the rest of the evening off. If my fiancé has a problem with that, please tell him to talk to me," I said as Robert opened the door for me.
"Of course, Miss Morgan. Enjoy your evening," Robert said as I walked out of the suite. I started walking away as the door closed and went to the elevator. I realised that there was no operator so I headed for the Promenade Deck instead to walk around and enjoy the crisp night air.
I walked around the deck and stopped at the starboard side of the ship. I held the railing and looked over the edge of the ship to see the water that would be lapping the side of ship. I stepped up on the lowest rung of the railing and looked over the edge. The water was overly interesting as I looked over the edge. I felt hands on my waist and I almost fell over the edge. I screamed.
"It's just me. I didn't want you to fall over the edge," Scott said. I put my hands on his as he helped me off the railing.
"I was fine. I just wanted to look at the water," I said.
"Railings are slick and I've seen plenty of people fall over because they wanted to look at the water," he said. I looked at him and blinked a few times.
"The water is always so pretty," I said. Scott turned me around and picked me up. I let out a small squeal and he put me on the railing again. I looked down and he kept his arms around me so I was stable.
"Has anyone ever told you that you are beautiful?" he asked. I looked down at him from my position and he looked up at me.
"My father," I told him and he kissed my hand.
"You are one of the most beautiful ladies that I have ever seen," he said. He lowered me to the ground and I looked into his eyes.
"And you are very handsome," I said. He moved one of the strands of hair that fell out of my up do and I felt my face warm up. We stared at each other and he leaned a little closer. I turned my head and stepped back. I wasn't ready to kiss Scott but I knew that he wasn't a bad person.
"I told Emma and Robert that they were off for the rest of the evening. I didn't want them to think that we don't care about them," I said as I turned away.
"Of course. I trust your judgement, Mae," he said. I hugged myself and looked at the moon.
"I believe that they are in a relationship and you need to make sure that you give them their space," I said. He didn't say anything for a while.
"How are we going to make this work, Mae?" he asked. I looked at him and he walked closer to me.
"Make what work, Scott?" I asked as I folded my hands behind me.
"We are engaged, Mae. We have to learn to act like it before the whole ship gets on and realises that we aren't what we say we are," he said. I looked at the ground. "I tried to make you the deal so at the very least we can fool the first class b*****ds that think that they know everything. I don't know what I can do for you that makes you realise that we can at least try a marriage." I felt tears well up in my eyes.
"No one ever said that I was happy with a marriage to you, Scott. My hand was forced in this. I am trying to make it work, Scott," I said. He sighed.
"Give me a chance. There is no way that I am the worse person you ever met in your nearly nineteen years," he said. I felt my throat close up and shut my eyes.
"I don't know what I feel, Scott. A part of me wants to stay with my raising and rebel against control Mr. Ismay has over me. Another part of me sees a future with you even though we have only just met yesterday. We are just pawns in Mr. Ismay's games and we are going to play right into his hand. I don't know what to do," I said as tears freely fell from my eyes and down my cheeks. He sighed and walked towards me to give me a hug as I cried.
