((Ralf is getting bad again, so this is just me venting. He's probably going to be fine, but I know the day will come when I have to say goodbye))
You had to say goodbye to your old friend, your dog, Buddy, who was old and needed to be put down due to his arthritis; you sat on the floor, cross legged, his head in your lap and tears threatening to spill. Charles, Erik and Logan sat with you, each wishing there was something they could do to heal the pain you were suffering.
"Good boy," you whispered with a broken tone, running your hand up and down the dog's back softly, mesmerising the last time you would feel his breathing beneath your fingers. "Good boy."
"Hey," Logan was the first to try his hand at reassuring you, placing his hand on your shoulder and giving you an understanding smile. "Remember how, when he was a pup, he used to fucking run around with my shirts in his mouth?"
"I do," you chuckled sadly, a fond melancholy taking over your mind as you looked down at Buddy, who was soon going to love you. "Logan... I don't want him to die."
"It's for his own good," Logan said bluntly, but still as reassuringly as he could. "Hrs old, and sick."
"But he's my friend," you wiped your runny nose on your sleeve and let out a quiet sniffle. "He's my friend, Logan."
"I know," he nodded. "But we all die. At least he won't suffer."
"I know," you replied glumly, letting out a quiet sob as Logan turned to Charles and Erik; he shook his head at them, silently saying he couldn't stay, and left.
"(Y/N)," Charles now tried his way. "Although Buddy won't be with us much longer, the memory of him will."
"I don't want memories," you cried, burying your head against Buddy's fur and sobbing as the old hound cried with you. "I don't want to say goodbye."
"Sometimes it's-"
"If you say for the best, I'm going to stab you," you threatened through sobs.
"It's hard," he nodded, patting your back softly. "Saying goodbye to such an old friend isn't going to be easy. It never is. But, (Y/N), you have to treasure these... Final moments. And you have to remember that he's always going to be with you." With that, Charles left, as he knew there was nothing more he could say or do.
"You understand, don't you, Erik?" You asked, raising your head and looking at him with sob stained features.
"I do," he admitted. "All too well."
"How do you... How did you say goodbye?"
"I didn't have the chance. But if I did, I would have held them close and told them how much I treasured them, how much I valued them."
"Do... Do you think he's going to a better place?"
"I do. Don't say goodbye, (Y/N), it's not the end. You'll see each other again."
