Chapter 22 What Does He Have That I Don't

Monroe just looks at the door with a hurt expression. Monroe puts her food and glass of champagne to the side. Vanessa, Ericca, and Ariella look at Monroe. Ericca asks, "You ok Monroe?" Monroe replies, "Peachy." There is an awkward silence for a few seconds before Ariella breaks it and asks, "Are you sure?" "Um actually" Monroe says, "I'd really like to be alone right now. I'll see you guys at school." Monroe lowers the bed and turns on her side, so that her back is facing Ericca, Vanessa, and Ariella.

Vanessa, Ericca, and Ariella look at each other. They collect all the food and glasses. "Bye Monroe" Vanessa says and walks out. "Hope you feel better" says Ariella as she walks out. Ericca asks, "What did she say Monroe?" Monroe's phone buzzes. 'Looks like you're nothing more than just practice, next time you mess with me you will become more than just her practice. Kisses -E' "Awesome" Monroe mutters.

"Monroe, you know you can talk to me" Ericca says. "Estella said to remember that my place was just practice for the real thing and then E sent me this" Monroe says showing Ericca the text. Ericca says, "I'm so sorry." "It's whatever" Monroe says, "I really want to be alone." "Ok" Ericca says, "If you need anything or just want to talk, give me a call." Monroe says, "Will do. Bye Ericca."

Two Days Later

Ariella, Ericca, Estella, and Vanessa are at their lockers. "I still can't believe he didn't ask me to the dance" Estella says. Ericca mumbles, "Are we seriously still talking about this?" "Talking about what" Monroe ask standing them. Estella, Ericca, Vanessa, and Ariella turn around and smile. "Monroe" they exclaim. They take turns hugging her, Estella being the last and longest one. "No, but seriously, who is still on about what" Monroe asks. Vanessa says, "Apparently the queen didn't get her king."

Monroe asks shocked, "Jake never asked you the dance?" "No, he didn't" Estella says sadly. Monroe pulls Estella into a comforting hug. "Jake's an idiot Estella" Monroe says, "Your beautiful and anyone would be lucky to call you theirs. It's his loss." Estella looks up at Monroe and smiles. Estella says, "Thanks Monty." Monroe smiles and enjoys the moment.

Ericca whispers to Vanessa and Ariella, "I don't think I'm the only one happy that Jake didn't ask her to the dance." Vanessa and Ariella laugh, but stop when they see Jake walk up to them. Vanessa whispers, "What does Estella even see in him? He isn't that great." "Try telling that to Estella" Ericca whispers. "What are you there whispering about over there" Estella asks still in Monroe's arms. "That offer to get your groove on with me is still on the table" Monroe says. "I gue-" Estella goes to say before she is interrupted.

"Estella" Jake says from behind Estella and Monroe. The smile on Monroe's face disappears. She sighs and lets go of Estella. "What" Estella asks rudely. Jake says, "I was just wondering if you wanted to get your groove on with me." He holds up two tickets to the dance. Monroe scoffs while Ericca, Vanessa, and Ariella roll their eyes. "I'd love to" Estella says smiling. Monroe just looks at Estella and hobbles off I'm her crutches.

Vanessa, Ericca, and Ariella look shocked. "What just happened" Ariella asks. Vanessa replies, "Estella was going to say yes to going to the dance with Monroe until-" "It was a rhetorical question Vanessa" Ariella says. "If you didn't want an answer than why did you ask" Vanessa asks. "Because- you know never mind, just forget it" Ariella says. Ericca says, "Poor Monroe."

Monroe makes her way down the hall. Monroe is walking past the principal's office when she bumps into someone. Monroe somehow manages to steady herself with the crutches. The person she bumped into wasn't so lucky and ended up falling down. Monroe hobbled over. Putting all her weight on one crutch, Monroe extends her other hand to the girl. "I'm sorry" Monroe says. "It's ok, I'm kinda a clutz" the girl says. The girl accepts Monroe's hand. "I'm Monroe" Monroe says. The girl says, "Kayla St. James."

Monroe goes to walk off when Kayla asks, "I'm new here, do you think you could show me around?" Monroe says, "Sure. Let me see your schedule." Kayla hands Monroe her schedule. "We have first, third, and last period together." They start walking to english. As they walk to class, they get to know each other. They walk into class and Monroe sees that Jake is sitting in her seat. Monroe rolls eyes. Monroe and Kayla sit in front of Ariella and Vanessa.

Ariella asks, "Who's your friend?" Kayla says, "Kayla St James." "I'm Ariella" Ariella says, "That's Vanessa, Ericca, and Estella." Kayla, Vanessa, Ariella, and Ericca start talking and getting to know each other. Jake says, "So I heard from one of my friends that someone is having a party tonight, want to go with me?" "Sure" Estella says. "Count me in" Vanessa says. Ericca says, "Oh jeez." Ariella says, "I'm not going to be the designated driver of Vanessa is drinking." Vanessa, Ericca, and Ariella look at Monroe. Monroe rolls her eyes and says, "Don't you three have a boyfriend and girlfriends for this reason? Fine."

Ariella says, "Samual needs to bring his grades up so he can play." "Parties aren't Helen's scene" Ericca says. Monroe turns to Kayla and asks, "Want to go with me?" Kayla says, "Sure." The rest of the day, Monroe hangs out with Kayla. It's after school and Ericca, Ariella, Estella, and Vanessa are at the grill. "Where is Monroe" Estella asks. "She is hanging out with Kayla. She is showing her around town" Ericca says. "Still" Estella asks. Ariella says, "You do realize school has only been over for like half an hour." Estella says, "She said she would be here and besides, we still need to get ready." "Chill Estella" Ericca says.

They hear the door open. They look over to see Monroe and Kayla walk in laughing. Monroe takes a seat next to Estella and Kayla takes a seat next to Ericca across from Monroe. "Took you long enough" Estella said. "Well hello to you to" Monroe says, " What time am I picking you three up?" "Eight" says Ericca. "If I want to go, I have some homework I got to do" Monroe says. Monroe and Kayla walk out. "Let's go get ready" Estella says.
