"That prat Malfoy always being everywhere we happen to be, next time we're going to tell him to leave the field so we can practice Quidditch without his filthy friends and himself watching us, and that Krum too! What does he think he's doing, just flying out of nowhe-"
"Can we please just stop talking about it?" Hermione interrupted Ron. She knew that might've sounded harsh but she was doing her Arithmancy essay, or at least trying to. Ron kept rambling on about Malfoy and Krum and all this was starting to stress her out even more. Tripping over and clutching Draco last minute for support was definatley not her favorite topic of conversation.
"Oh, I see!" Ron looked slightly taken aback but yet determined to prove a point, "You didn't mind Krum flying down, making quite an entrance. It's really kinda strange if you ask me, just happening to see you. He doesn't even know how to pronounce-"
"Ron, please!" Hermione had definatley had enough for one night. First Malfoy, now Ron. "I'm just trying to do my essay, which you should be doing as well. Finals are right around the corner." She shot him a disapproving look which he ignored. Hermione still couldn't believe that Krum wanted to ask her to the ball.
"Whatever, I'm off to bed," Ron finished discombobulately and Harry, clearly tired after today's debacle, troised after him to their dormitory.
After a sustained amount of time passed, Hermione figured she better be off to bed like the others. As she was getting ready for her slumber, many of her classmates were gigging as she entered. They all stopped and stared at Hermione, wide-eyed and jaw-dropped. She suddenly felt very self-conscious standing there alone.
"What?" Hermione demanded as Lavender Brown giggled blaringly.
"Well, is it true?" Parvati Patil demanded looking slightly envious of Hermione who stood there utterly confused.
"What?" She repeated more firmly than the last, anger was rising up inside of her; how was she supposed to know what was true when they wouldn't even tell her?
"Ughhhh," Lavender faked sympathy, "She's clueless. Well, that would be the first..." she muttered that last part to herself but Hermione still heard it. The girls burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter while Hermione stood there, irratated as ever.
"Just tell me already!"
"Okay..." More giggles came from Parvati. "Okay-I'm serious-now," she breathed while recovering from her laughter.
After a deep breath, "We've heard from reliable sources that Viktor-" the girls all let out high-pitched giggles at his name, "-asked you to the Yule Ball! Viktor Krum! You're so lucky, Hermione!" Parvati finally told her.
"I wish I could be you!" A girl shouted toward Hermione.
"Yeah, he's dreamy...if only he would go for me..."
"Oh the things I would do to that one!"
"GUYS!" Hermione shouted at the awed-faced girls who were looking at Hermione in an approvingly and envious matter. "He was going to ask me, I think, but then..."
"Then what?" The girls questioned Hermione with a frantic expression all at the same time. She couldn't tell if they were nervous Viktor didn't ask her, or excited that there was a chance he was still going alone...most likely the second one.
"Malfoy." Hermione finished, and by the looks the girls all exchanged, she could tell that they understood perfectly well what had happened.
"Stupid git! Don't worry Hermione, he's probably jealous..." The girls all tried to reassure her which Hermione thought was sweet of them. It seemed so different hanging out with a group of giggling girls when she almost always hung out with Harry and Ron.
