"We ready?"
I took a sip of hot tea from the cream colored mug and nodded while Angie hit the button on her mic to start the podcast, In Real Life.
I promised Angie an interview before Taylor was born and never got around to it. So I didn't think it a coincidence at all when I ran into her yesterday at Brooklyn Chop House while shooting a Verizon commercial. Angie was one of those industry people you couldn't help but become friends with. She was incredibly sweet and humble; a beautiful soul and down to earth.
When she mentioned the interview again during our convo, I made sure to pencil her in before my flight home to Virginia.
"Angie Martinez, In Real Life Podcast," she spoke clearly into her mic, "Lashontae is here guys!"
"Ayeeeee!" I said as she and her staff clapped excitedly.
"We're so invested in your life, you know this. And this is a brand new season."
"And congrats on your new season too."
"Thank you mama," she responded wholeheartedly, "your life since the last time we spoke is a whole different life."
"Uh huh." I replied coyly.
"Like, who are you now versus who you were the last time we spoke?"
"You know," I said as she laughed a bit, "it's crazy. I'm somewhere, Angie, I had no idea I would be."
"I thought there maybe a window open though when I asked you about Trey last time; I asked what that relationship taught you. And you said he made you feel human, that he was one of the only people on the planet to check you, other than your mother and siblings; you said he gives it to you raw. And I thought, 'wait a minute,' like, it wasn't spoke of with the venom one would speak of an ex with. There was a softness there still."
"Uh huh." I said again making her laugh, "um, I'll say it took some time to get there."
"Cause...what shifted?"
Talking about my relationship publicly was extremely comfortable; Angie was amazing and one of the best, but I still found myself hesitating when it came to what to say.
"With time, I was open to what he was saying. Like being grown, maybe mature and realizing what I wanted, what we wanted."
Her face still seemed perplexed.
"But what happened?" She pressed.
"Seriously, communication happened. We had a couple scenarios that put us both on the spot a lil bit and forced us to deal with some stuff. Emotions were buried and we both were hurt so I think we received things differently."
"Was it weird to fall back in love?"
"Yes," I said truthfully, "if I'm real though, I was just mad. I was never not mad at him which means I was always still in love."
