Somewhere...

"They are such delightful boys don't you think?" The head maid said chuckling softly as she watched the twins flying their kites high in the sky above their heads.

"That they are Madam." the younger maid smiled as Gaoguis feet skipped and jumped to make his kite flit about in the clouds, while Ye Hua ran in circles around him.

"Is their lunch ready?" she asked the young girl who was one of three maids under her direct command.

"Yes Madam.  It is in the basket." she said pointing down at the picnic hamper at her feet.

"Good, prepare it then fetch them.  All this running around will have tired them out, so take them in for a nap when they are done." she said turning back to the main house which had been her residence since the boys father had been their age.

"Yes Madam." the girl bowed before quickly grabbing hold of the blanket to spread it out on the grass.  The boys loved to eat outside in the fresh air rather than in the dark dining hall surrounded by what they considered scary masks that lined the walls.

And in no time at all, both boys who had just celebrated their fifth birthday, were on the blanket happily eating while the young maid filled their heads with fanciful stories of fairies and dragons.

"I want to see a real Dragon." Ye Hua gushed excitedly as she told them the story of the War God of Heaven who fought a Heavenly battle for his Princess Fairy Queen of the Fox Tribe.

It was their favourite story and they never tired of hearing it.  Their lives were filled with wonder and fanciful stories, and their maids ensured that they never needed for anything.  Their lives were pleasant and carefree.  Not even their fathers gruff growls at the maids for telling them such stories, could still the excitement of their shared dream of meeting a Fairy Princess of their own or even becoming the next War God.

Not that the maids listened to their father.  The boys would beg for the stories until they gave in anyway, but they learned to keep them for when their father was away on business or in his study too busy for their youthful exuberance which tired him out.

Their mother on the other hand was a gentle woman who did not mind the stories if they made the boys happy.  She preferred peace and quiet, so the boys spent most of their time with the maids who they both loved very much, especially Ai, the one sitting with them now and filling their heads with even more fanciful stories.

And it was under the careful watchful eyes of their maids that the boys grew healthy, strong and ready to face a world of adults.

---

Into their teens they flew, the years passing them by without any real traumas.  It is said, that an adult rarely remembers the small details of a happy childhood, but trauma remains with them forever , right down to the smallest of details,  so these boy had little memories of their childhood to draw on, only that it was pleasant.

They were good boys who loved their parents, were respectful of their elders and honoured their traditions and rituals.  One of which was the commemoration for the dead.  A Festival they enjoyed participating in because it meant that they could wear masks and dance openly in the streets with the rest of the common folk who surrounded their Palace grounds.

Though it was obvious that the boys were from high ranking families, because of the guards and maids that trailed behind them.  But this didn't stop them from having fun.  Into the streets they flew singing along with the rest of the town folks, and marvelling at the giant dragon puppets swerving above their heads.  It was such a bright and cheerful place, smiling faces were everywhere and the lanterns and streamers that filled the streets only added to the spectacle.
