Mrs. Kersey's Reading/LA class.
1st and 2nd period.
Writing something about our feelings.
Someone sitting across from me
pulls my paper to see what I wrote.

I look up, about to scold him,
but the face that's reading what I wrote
stares at me with recognition.
It's him.

We're in class together after months.
Everyone knew how much I missed you.
Kinda got annoying at how people keep bringing it up,
but we went back to being friends again-
better friends than we ever were.

Just a normal day in class, right?
Mrs. Kersey is going through papers,
calling out names.
I hear her say, "No more dreams of Pedro anymore,"
'cause he's here again,
right where I want him to be.

Time flashes by like whiplash,
and we're now in high school.
Forced into a GT class
with a strict teacher in a business suit
wielding a long ruler
and self-indulgent, awkward nerds
being all weird that I can't even.

The teacher is a mad woman-
a sociopath, mind you.
I'm pretty much the only normal one there-
until Pedro is suddenly shoved into the classroom.

His eyes look over the class awkwardly.
No one seems friendly enough to sit by.
Then he finds me and smiles,
rushing to put his short stature
right next to me, the tall one.

When we kept talking in class, the teacher scolded me personally
as if it was all me,
but it was all good
because the rest of those days with him
was probably the happiest I've been
since before he left.

If only that happiness was real.
I'm hoping it will be
when I finally see him again
in high school,

but this was all
just a dream of Pedro.
Some dreams are like this one,
where we are the bestest of friends
being our goofy, happy selves.

Then there are those dreams of Pedro
that are the most haunting of nightmares....

Will I have to go through many more
dreams of Pedro
before I finally see him again?
