"Morning Mumma." Forrest spoke.
He walked further into the kitchen where I was making breakfast.
After yesterday, we needed to start fresh, and my big, country, breakfast was what we needed to start us off.
"Good morning."
I'd invited Trey, Tae, and the kids back over to discuss the incident yesterday via text without Todd's presence. So far, I hadn't received a response but I was still hopeful.
"How you feeling?" I asked.
He titled his head from side to side.
"I'm aight."
I could tell he felt a little better.
Because he literally had just walked in the house, he automatically assumed responsibility.
"I had Bigs pull the security tape when I got back last night." He mumbled.
I sighed and turned over the pancakes on the griddle.
"So did I." I admitted.
"Kaleb lied." He added shaking his head, "he waited until he saw she didn't have her vest on and pushed her in the deep end."
Kaleb and Karsten were Todd's grandchildren from his daughter, Kayla. While he didn't have the best relationship with her or Forrest, since his prison release, he was making strides toward becoming a better person and father. Forrest wanted nothing to do with him and only tolerated him for me, but Kayla as of late was more receptive to Todd's advances in getting to know her. They started talking and as of late started spending a considerable amount of time together; with her and her children; Karsten, a beautiful ten year old girl and Kaleb, a rambunctious but handsome autistic eight year old. Recently, I started spending time with them too and grew extremely fond. In my mind, intermingling them with my own grandchildren seemed natural and seeing them all together having a great time yesterday filled me.
However, Trey did make his demands clear from the start of Todd and I being together; he wasn't okay with us being married and he was against Todd being around his children in any capacity.
Initially, I agreed because; what else could I do?
I loved my son and respected him tremendously; however, the woman inside struggled. No; I hadn't forgot about everything Todd put our family through historically. However, I believed in redemption. Not just with Todd, but with Claude as well. Just like I bit the bullet when Trey hated my guts for reconnecting him and his father, I did the same for Forrest because I wanted Trey's results for him too. I wanted both of my children to have what I never got; a true relationship with the man responsible for their existence.
Somewhere along the way with Todd though, our connection sparked again.
What I always deemed impossible actually started to seem in reach and honestly? It's the best situation I've ever been in this time around. I truly believed Todd had and has been rehabilitated and is now a better person. He's proved it since he's been out; I just wished Trey and Forrest would allow him an opportunity to redeem himself with them too.
