Chapter 40 - Hide from the Hunt

June:

"Dani look out!"

Exhausted and running on adrenaline, the kids failed to notice Dani falling behind. The masked men were still after them.

Kat darted after Dani, pulling her out of the way of a deadly knife, aimed to wound her.

"Over here!" Xavier called out, the three of them ducked into a narrow alley-way and kepton running.

"Where's Hearth?" the panicked and shaky question was asked as the group climbed a building in a rundown zone of Gotham.

"Your brother's fine, Dani. We had to split up - shake 'em off."

"The question is," started Kat, "Who are they?"

"Ash, Jay, are either of you hurt?" Lex quickly examined the boys.

"No, we're fine," said Jason, still high on adrenaline.

Lex looked at them, attempting to keep the fear from his voice, it would do no good for the boys to be afraid, "we need to get back to the others."

"With the crazy people hunting us down?" Dick asked, his breathing a little heavier than normal.

"Asha. No one is safe. But we are better off together." Lex said in desperation to Dick. "We don't know who those people are or what they want. Right now - everyone is in danger - we need to find the gang and get somewhere safe."

Dick nodded in understanding, backing down. Lex was right: they weren't safe. Assassins were hunting...

...and they were the prey.

"Sage, are you okay? We gotta keep moving." Tris asked the frozen child.

Skye finally took a moment to process what had just happened; or rather, who.

Talons.

"Sage?"

"...yeah, I'm okay..."

"Stay here, I gotta check they haven't followed us." Skye watched as the older girl left the safety of the dark alleyway.

Taking in her surrounding, Skye had to hide a smirk; her memory hadn't failed her. "Tris!" Skye called out, "down here."

Tris looked over at Skye from the corner of the building. She was scanning the streets, looking for any sign of the men that were chasing them.

"What is it?"

"It's a maintenance hatch to the old subway lines. Abandoned, yet runs under the entire city; we can lose them in there."

Despite being summer, a bone-chilling breeze swept through the city in the late afternoon sun. If only life was as peaceful on the ground as it was up there. Wishful thinking. Running over to the girl she knew as Sage, together they vanished off the streets. Tris covered up the manhole after she was in, curiosity eating away inside of her. How did this seven-year-old girl know about abandon train lines that not even a street kids like herself knew about.

"So, kid," started Tris, jumping down from the ladder onto the - slightly damp - dirt floor. "How do you know about this place?"

Skye began tracing the walls with her hand, seemingly looking for something. It was a while before she answered.
