"Good morning," Connor's familiar voice was the first thing Y/N heard when she entered the dining room.
"You've woken up earlier than usual, did you sleep alright?" Connor questioned her calmly. If he didn't have such a robotic tone, he would've seemed like he cared.
Maybe he does.
I hope he does.Sighing, Y/N forced a smile to come out of her lips. "I've slept...fine," she lied. She hadn't really. She had been stressing out over this day the whole night. Tossing and turning in bed like a maniac. She couldn't even focus on working on the sensors!
"You look tired," Connor informed her after a quick scan of her face. "You should get more sleep."
"I'll worry about sleep later," Y/N replied with a murmur. He was right. She did look tired and she was tired. But Y/N had to get this day going, especially since it was critical. Her eyes trailed down to Connor's hands and she was surprised to see what he was holding.
"What are you doing?" Y/N asked him, blinking in surprise at seeing his hands holding a book. It was hers and it was her favourite one. He'd probably gotten it from her old studio. Where his room is.
"I was interested in it," Connor informed her casually. He raised the book slightly and analysed it closely. "It's been a while since I've seen one. They're quite rare these days."
"I try my best to collect them," Y/N shared honestly. While technology has certainly made life easier, it has also caused Y/N to miss certain thing she had before. One of those things, were books. "If I see any books around, I'll collect them. I don't have many though."
"I think Lieutenant Anderson collects books as well," Connor stated. Y/N lifted a surprised brow. Connor eyed the book closer. He read the title, traced his finger along the spine of the book, flipped through the pages and turned to look at the blurb. He seemed intrigued by it, "This has been my first time really inspecting one."
"They're lovely things," said Y/N with a shrug. She was about to open her mouth to say something off topic, but Connor stopped her before she could.
"I can tell why people liked them," Connor stated. He was still analysing the blurb, before turning around and facing the title page. He probably knew loads of information about that book, yet he made it seem like he had just picked it out from the library and had no idea what it was about.
"Read it. It's pretty good," Y/N suggested, her lips betrayed a soft smile. "It's one of my favourites. I recommend it."
"I know this book," Connor cut in, turning his gaze to look at her. He already confirmed Y/N's previous statement. "I know all the characters, the message of it, the theme, every quote and question, the plot and how many pages it has."
"I don't care if you know the book," Y/N rolled her eyes, but her smile remained on her lips. "Give it a read and enjoy it. Forget all about the story, the quotes and everything else. Read it, flick through the pages, take in the feeling of it and enjoy it. Or read it and hate it. Simple as that."
"Huh," Connor breathed out. He moved his dark eyes back down to the book. With gentle hands, he opened the first page and scanned the words hastily. He read it all so fast, Y/N was surprised to see him move in mere seconds to the next page. It almost seemed like he was pretending to read.
He looks cute doing it though.
That's not what matters here, she reminded herself. Biting her inner cheek, she approached Connor and softly covered the book with her hands. She smiled awkwardly at him once he turned to look up at her, "Look, I love seeing you read my favourite book, but we've got to get going."
