Chapter 15 - a shot through the heart

Clementine's POV

The firefight was over and the others run over to Y/N.

You: we need to get him to help.

You says this sentence through the tears

Jade: we can't risk bringing him to the main base if we are followed.

Anna: Wellington is in no condition to help us. There is only one option.

Joe: I'm not going back there they will just turn us away again

You: my friend javi has taken control over the new frontier. He will help us.

Tom: joe it's our only option for him to survive without killing the rest of the people at the base.

Joe: fine but I'm not happy about it.

Alex: we can't reach it in time.

Joe: I'll call for the car. It will run out of gas but we'll get a head start.

The car arrived after about half an hour. We lay Y/N down on the back seat and we speed into the distance.

1 hour time skip

The car had broken down just outside the city. Joe carries Y/N as blood drips down his arm and onto the floor. His coughs are like the whimpers of a wounded puppy only making your heart break even more.

Your eyes well up and you begin to sob. You stop bringing your hands up to your face AJ walks over and hugs your leg. You notice jack dragging his feet along and has his head hung low.

You go over to him picking him up giving him a long hug. He is shaking and is clearly trying to look tough by fighting back the tears. He's a good kid.

As you reach the main gate there is a group of people watching you. You are at the back and you are hidden behind joe. One of the people on the gate is someone you recognise. It is gabe.

Gabe: who are you and what are you doing here.

You: gabe it's me clementine we need your help.

Gabe: oh shit. Go and get javi.

After a couple moments the front gates open and javi and Kate walk out

Javi: hello clementine. What is wrong?

He notices your red eyes and tears running down your checks

You: it's my friend, Y/N. he's dying and we need your help.

Javi: ok clem we'll get him to the hospital as soon as possible.

Joe gives Y/N to Anna who follows javi. Kate gives you a big hug as you break down in her arms.

Kate: it's ok clem you did what you could not we just have to wait.

Gabe: clem it will be ok

he says hugging you. You look up at him and he gives you a sympathetic look.

Kate: ok everyone you all need to come over here so we can check for bite marks, injuries we can help with or anything that will be a danger to the community.

Joe looks furious and is kind of being scary. He is clearly trying as hard as possible not to yell at someone. Kate notices this and tries to calm him down.

Kate: I've heard how these people have treat you and I don't expect you to forgive but I promise we are a better place now and we will take care of you no matter how long you want to stay here.

Joe: I want to stay here for as little time as possible.

Kate: it wasn't right to turn your people away when you where in need even after you had saved so many of our members. That was before me and javier arrived. He keeps everyone safe and happy and does what he can for the people outside the walls.

After the checks the group all split off and do there own things. You head straight for the hospital and run to the room he is in. Anna is sat outside and is clearly stressed. You can hear some occasional yells.

You: who is screaming.

She turns to you with puffy eyes.

Anna: they have no pain killers or medicine to put him to sleep. They have to remove two bullets. He woke up as they open up the one in his hip and they are still doing that one. One only just missed his hand and the one in his leg went straight through.

After a long while you hear more yells as things get knocked over.

Anna: he's like a little brother to me you know. I always liked him since we first met. He stood up to joe which takes a lot of courage especially at age 11. He would always come talk to me about nightmares he had or things on his mind. You aren't the only one he told about susie. He always blames himself for anything that goes wrong and for a while he was really sad and went quite.

She begins to cry

Anna: that was before you turned up. It was the first time I've ever seen him... truly happy.

You rest you head on her shoulder and she smiles at you.

One of the doctors walks out.

Doctor: we have managed to get one bullet out but the one lodged in his collarbone is stuck and we need to make a cut to reach it. He is hard to handle when his is wriggling so I was hoping one of you could be their for support.

You: I'll do it.

As you walk in you see him laying on a blood soaked table and is clenching his fists. He is pail and has lost most of his strength. He spots you and looks shocked to see you.

You walk over to him and hold his check and he lays into it closing his eyes

Y/N: is it over.

He says this panting and exhales quietly.

You: no but I'm here for you so don't worry.

Doctor: ok we will be making a cut now.

As the scalpel pierces his flesh his eyes open wide. As they bring back the blade cutting deep he looks down at the blade. He begins to panic. You turn his head towards you.

You: just keep your eyes on me ok.

His eyes are wide and he begins to whimper. His eye colour turns light green out of fear as his pail skin moves as he furrows his brow and begins to scream as the doctors plunge their tweezers into his open wound and dig around. After about a minute they pull out a piece of jacketed lead and place it on the table. They then close up his wounds as he lays his head back on the table.

By the time they have finished he has fallen asleep.

One week time skip

You, jack and AJ had never left his side and you and AJ would sleep in the chair and jack would climb in with him. He had been asleep for most of the time and when he did wake up the doctors said he wouldn't remember it.

The rest of alpha squad left after they heard the news of the surgery but Anna stayed to look after the three of you. Anna, Kate, javi and gabe would normally come and visit but you didn't speak much.

You hold his axe as you notice the carvings that weren't there before and each one has a name next to it so you decide to add your own and carve a circle in with your hat in the middle just under where the metal and the wood meet in the back. You carve your name under it.

It took your mind of Y/N's condition while it lasted. A tear hits your lap and you feel a hand wipe away another.

You: gabe I'm ok just leave me alone for a minute.

You look up expecting to see a head in a beanie but there was a boy laying down and a chest covered in scars as he gives you a smile.

His eyes where deep blue.
