Chapter 16 - just a walk

Clementine's POV

It was Y/N's first day of being fit enough to walk but only with a crutch. You all went on a walk. You, Y/N, Anna, AJ and jack.

You are talking to Y/N happily about all the different adventures you had been on but couldn't help but see he keeps winsing in pain every so often.

You: we can go back to the hospital if you want

Y/N: no I think I need the fresh air and look how happy the kids are. They deserve a break. They are to innocent for this world.

You: poor AJ he has seen to much. Especially since kenny died.

A tear wells up in your eye and an arm reaches over your shoulder and Y/N gives you a big hug.

Y/N: I only wish i got to meet him again. After he got lost in that alley I though he was dead.

You: he made mistakes but he was a good and kind man.

Y/N: jack has seen to much for his age as well. He has trust issues with anyone I have a slight disagreement with. I just wish I could have brought him up in a safer area but if I left him at the base he starts screaming until I come back.

You: I've never seen anyone more depressed than when joe was carrying you.

Y/N: you where to. Don't lie.

You blush as he taps his finger on your nose.

You: well obviously your the only one left out of the first people I met. Krista could be alive but she could be anywhere by now

Y/N: yes I miss everyone so much. They risked life and limb for us and we survived but I can't move on without the thought of who I had left behind. Carley, duck, katcha, kenny, Krista, omid and... Lee. I haven't seen anyone out here with a bond as strong as you two. He looked after me to and I miss him but...

He stops realising it will just bring back bad memories and you hold his hand as  he locks his fingers around yours. You feel the scars on the back of his hand and he seems to notice looking ashamed.

Y/N: I'd never really noticed how many they where until I got these new ones. I guess I just got used to them.

You think of all the scars running from the back of his hand up to the joint at the forearm. The small cuts on his legs off the glass that he has told you was from a large tube he was stored in. The ones he hasn't told you about on his biceps that look like claw marks. And the long thin one running down his left eye of a piece of glass of the same tube.

You: I don't think they are something to be ashamed of. They don't make you look ugly. It just makes me worry about all the hardships you have been through.

He looks up at you with a smile and closes his eyes. You see the large towering buildings stand like blades of grass and you are all little ants in one large garden. You think it's weird how these streets used to be filled and every house or flat held a person or family.

You arrive back at the main square and Anna takes the kids over into the field as they run their hands through the grass.

Kate walks over.

Kate: Y/N I think it's time you changed you bandages. No offence but they look filthy.

Y/N: ok I'll go and do it now I guess. Get it out the way.

Y/N walks off as you watch him go.

Kate: what are you two then.

You: that was a bit blunt.

You are flushed by the question and look at her with your red face.

Kate: sorry.

After a long awkward pause you speak up.

Y/N: I'm not sure really. We both like each other but neither has made or move or asked the big question. I think we would both like to be more than friends but I'm not sure. It's complicated.

Kate: I see well I guess I'll leave you to it. Bye

You wave her off as you look at AJ playing in the grass with a little smile on his face.

You spot gabe walking over and you turn to him.

Gabe: hi clementine.

You: hi gabe

You stand awkwardly looking at each other and you would each bring up a conversation but it would die down after a few responses.

Gabe:So that's AJ huh

You: yep. That's my little goofball

He spots you and waves and you wave back.

Gabe asks you a few questions and you answer them trying to get him to talk about himself.

Gabe: do you like me

You: of course I do. Your so nice and friendly. Sure your a bit of a dork but everyone needs a dork in there life.

He suddenly leans and kisses you on the lips and pulls back realising what he had just done.

Gabe: oh my god I am so sorry I just like you a lot

You: it's ok gabe I just don't like you in that wa-

Out of the corner of your eye you see a tall boy with a crutch in his hand. You see the colour fade from his eyes as they turn a shade of gray and he turns his head limping away and bowing his head.

You: oh shit. Y/N!

You call his name but he doesn't turn, stop or even react he just keeps moving. You ran after him and stand by his side. His eyes are grey and have lost all colour and he's walking is a one of tiredness and sadness.

You: Y/N you have got to listen to me. I didn't kiss him.

His body doesn't stop or react he just keeps staring forward. He does not seem angered, sad or forgiving. He is just emotionless. His lips part and a low gravely voice follows. He says one word.

Y/N:ok...
