Chapter 36: Letter

We returned to the base the next day, settling in my room. But Ruira took her sweet time changing some clothes in front of everyone.

Ruira wasn't the one who was particularly worried about things most ladies would. Like showing skin, or taking a bath with a man she just met, or sitting in an unladylike manner. Couldn't blame her, she lived in a forest for about 4 years.

I had told Seth about Ruira's arrival, and he was pretty happy to have more help on the scouting department.

As I settled down in my room after moving some stuff around, there was a knock on the door as Fiore came in.

"Hey, a letter came for you while you were away. I was minding my business when this blinked into existence. Thought you'd wanna check it out."

"Who's it from?"

"Doesn't say. Just had your name on it. By the way, is that your sis, Alice?"

"Hey kid, the name's Ruira," she waved. "Nice meeting you. You must be Fiore, and that little one behind you..."

"I'm Citra," she bowed. "Nice to meet you too. I heard Raito found Alice's sister, so I wanted to have a look, or... well, hear, in my case."

"You have some interesting friends, Raito."

"Thanks?" I tilted my head. I took the letter from Fiore. "So what's this all about...."

Mary. She wanted me to look for her... She apparently had a plan to get Claire on our side as well as bring down the church... She gave me instructions to enter a specific inn. She wanted me to look for her at midnight.

Another thing I had to do was to bring Alice along. Sounded a little worrying, but I had to go along with it.

Part of me was worried about it being a trap, but Mary knew I could reset it things went wrong. So I went on a hunch and decided to trust her.

Sounded like fun. The only problem was getting there. I just left the base to look for Ruira, and now I had to go back to Machina to find Mary, one of the biggest threats to the revolution. How the heck was I gonna tell Seth about it?

I couldn't just say I was gonna waltz into the church just because I got some letter from Mary. I mean, one, I would get rejected almost immediately, and two, I was gonna be the centre of suspicion. There was no way anyone would believe me saying Mary was part of us either. Nor regarding Claire.

I just had to try asking in a more subtle way. If it didn't work, I just had to reset and try something else.

"So you dragged me all the way here, to ask me a question?"

"In a sense. I don't really want anyone else knowing this just yet. Especially Larry."

"Sounds serious. Fill me in."

"Now before accuse me of anything, I am 100% an ally of the revolution, with no ulterior motive."

"Okay...?"

"So a while ago, I joined the task to get information on Scarlet. Well, I got extra information on Mary."

"That Mary?"

"That Mary. I ended up encountering her during that time. And this, is a letter she gave me then."

"She did? And she wants your help?"

"It sounds suspicious, I know. But if this goes well, both Mary and Claire can be our allies."

"Say this does work, and it isn't some sort of trap, alright kid? Then what? Folk here don't exactly like those two. We've had plenty of our men killed by them already, few of which were my close friends."
