John's POV

"Pegs, you're late again."
"Shut up! Angelica wouldn't hurry the fuck up and drive me here! Don't tell your dad!" Peggy is sixteen and her dad won't let her get a driver's license. We work in my dad's coffee shop, it's not much but it pays tuition. I'm trying to get into King's college to prove to my dad that I'm not an idiot. Anyway, Peggy grabbed her yellow apron and slipped it over her head just as our friends walked in. We open at eight a.m. and they're always the first ones here.
"Hey!" Lafayette called as Peggy and I started to whip up their usuals.
"Hey!" I called back, I handed Laf his drink and leaned against the pick up counter. The bell rang and a small man walked in. He had shoulder length chocolate brown hair tied in the messiest of ponytails and hazel eyes. He seemed to be a head shorter than me and kind of...cute. "Good morning." He approached the counter and Peggy shoved me to the register.
"Morning. Can I get a black coffee?"
"What size?" His eyes kind of widened and he searched the menu for the sizes. "Small, medium, or large?" I never call it venti or whatever because that's stupid.
"Large. And a croissant." I nodded and rang him up.
"You've got good taste, shorty." Laf chuckled.
"Vraisemblablement." Laf beamed and the man smiled.
"Can I get a name for your order?"
"Alexander-shit-I mean-I-Alex. Yeah, Alex." I smiled and scribbled his name on the cup. It was clear he had anxiety and he played with a leather bracelet on his wrist. "I'm sorry." He mumbled.
"Nah, you're fine."
"O-oh." He paid and trudged away to a table in the corner.
"Poor guy." I sighed and Peggy made me make his order. "Pegs, are you gonna do anything today?" I chuckled.
"He's cute, mon ami." Laf whispered.
"Who?" I poured the grounds in the machine and frowned.
"Alex!" Herc waved his arms and I looked over at Alex. "You should get with that."
"Herc!" I blushed and hit him with a towel. The machine finished and I poured Alex his coffee. I opened the oven thingy and pulled out a croissant. I decided not to call the order but to bring it to him. He was typing away on a laptop and invested in his work. I smiled and set his order down. "One coffee and one croissant." I smiled, Alex quickly closed his laptop and looked up at me.
"You didn't have to bring it over here. I could've gotten up."
"Nah, were not busy anyway." I shrugged and stuffed my hands in the pockets of my apron.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
"Oh, sorry. God! Sorry! Sorry. Sorry." He put his face in his hands and I put my hand on his shoulder.
"You've done nothing wrong, Alex. You don't need to apologize."
"I'm sorry. I'm just new to New York." He relaxed and I moved my hand. The bell jingled and Charles Lee walked in.
"Well, welcome to New York. I've got work." Alex nodded and I ran back behind the counter. I took Lee's order and leaned against the counter. I looked over at Alex and saw that he was typing again. I smiled and Laf hit my arm. "What!"
"Shoot your shot." I shook my head and watched Lee walk out. Suddenly Alex was in front of me and I blushed a bit.
"Sorry. I...um...Can I get a refill?"
"How much coffee can you drink?" I chuckled, Alex looked down and I took his cup. "Coffee, black, right?"
"Yes, sir." I looked behind me and smiled.
"John."
"What?"
"John Laurens." Alex smiled and I poured his coffee. "Here ya go." I put his coffee on the counter and Alex pulled his wallet out. "Nah, on the house."
"Oh-"
"Just don't tell my dad." I giggled, Alex blushed and sat back down. The shop got busy and Laf decided to start his shirt early to help out. Herc hung out at the counter and helped us call out orders. I noticed Alex had drained his second coffee and was typing away again. It was lunch time and the rush was insane. I barely had enough time to be nice to the cute boy in the corner. I fixed Alex a water and croissant. I quickly set it next to him and ran back to work.

Alex's POV

I've been here hours working on my book. I feel bad, I'm taking up space but I need to finish these chapter. That barista, John, he's cute though. He's really nice and understanding. No one has ever told me I don't have to apologize. He makes my mouth shut. What is that? Speechlessness. If he makes me speechless I don't wanna talk anymore. I glanced up and smiled at John. He was working on something and laughing with his co-workers. I looked down at the table and smiled. There was a cup of water and croissant sitting there with a note that said-
