John's POV
"Hi! Hello! Do you work here?" The freckled boy jumped and fumbled with the books in his arms.
"Yes."
"I need help. I'm doing a project on the founding fathers and I have no clue what I'm doing." The boy smiled and slid a book on a self.
"What's the project about?"
"How Anthony Ramos impacted the war or something. I have no clue who he is."
"I do. Follow me." I followed him and he searched the shelves. He started pulling books off shelves and handed them to me. "Those should do. I can't check you out." He moved behind the counter and smiled. "I just need your name and number." I gave them to him and he put them in the system. "You'll get your card in a few days. The system will email you when it's ready." I nodded and he started scanning the books. "Are you in college?"
"Yeah. I go to King's."
"Oh! I go there too!"
"Really? What grade are you in?"
"I'm a junior."
"Ah. I'm a senior. I pegged you as like...a freshman." He chuckled and smiled.
"Um...I'm supposed to be a freshman but all the professors agreed I should bump up."
"Wow. Smarty." He chuckled and pushed the books across the desk to me.
"If you need anything you know where to find me." I nodded and sat at a table in the back. I worked on my project and periodically looked up at the boy behind the counter. He was cute and smart. It made my heart flutter when he'd pass by and smile down at me. Or when he asked if I needed anything I was tongue tied. When I was done for the day I gathered my things and stopped by the desk on my way out. "Hey." He smiled, looking up from what seemed like homework.
"Hey...um...what are the hours?"
"Oh. Twelve to ten."
"Ok. Thank you. Maybe I'll see you around campus?"
"Maybe." He smiled.
"Hey, Betsy." Alex smiled, a girl had walked in and he seemed happy to see her. I've come here everyday to work on my project and I've gotten to know a little bit about Alexander Hamilton.
"We need to talk." I kept my head down and glanced up every few seconds.
"Talk? What's wrong?"
"It's not working out. We're done."
"W-what?"
"You're too girly and-and...weird. I can't follow your conversations and it's weird when we're both wearing a skirt. I just...I can't be with you."
"Would it help if I stopped wearing skirts?"
"No. We are done." The girl walked out and I kept my head down. It wasn't my business. Soon I heard sniffing from behind the counter and Alex put his head down on the counter. I watched him for a moment and decided to do something. I got up and approached the counter.
"Alex?"
"Hm?" He looked up and wiped his tears. "Oh. John. What can I do for you."
"Are you ok?"
"Oh! Your card is in." He handed me the card and picked up a few books. "If you'll excuse me I have to put some books up." He moved out from behind the counter and into the shelves. I followed and he kept his back turned to me.
"Alex...I heard what happened." He ignored me and I sighed. "Talk to me please?" He put a few more books up and moved back toward the counter. "Don't shut me out because you're upset. Let's talk about this. Maybe I can help?" He turned around and hugged me tightly.
"Why does nobody love me!" He sobbed.
"Oh! I'm sure that's not true." I whispered, he sobbed harder and I rubbed his back. "I'm sure your mom and dad love you."
"No...they're gone."
"Gone?"
"My dad left us and my mom is dead."
"I'm sure your family loves you."
"My brother is dead and my relatives didn't want me."
"Ok...you still have me."
"You don't love me." He mumbled.
"True but...I'm not gonna walk away from you. I'm here if you need me. We're friends." Alex looked up at me and I smiled. "Why don't I sit at the counter with you and we can talk. Huh?"
"I'd like that."
"Alright. Let me get my stuff." He nodded and pulled away. I gathered my things and he sat at his normal spot. I sat across from him and glanced at what he was working on. "Whatcha doin'?"
"Homework. I have this essay for history."
"Ah."
"How's it going with Anthony Ramos?"
"Ok, I guess. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right." I chuckled, he smiled and I grinned. "There it is!"
"What?"
"Your smile, cutie." He blushed and giggled a bit. We chatted and I drove him to his apartment.
