John's POV

"Alex!" I called, I found him in his bedroom passed out at his laptop and sighed. "Alex?" I cooed, shaking him just a bit. "Wake up, silly." Alex stirred and glanced up at me. "I've got a question." Alex sat up and wiped the drool off his cheek.
"What's your question?" He yawned.
"Do you remember when my dad forced Martha and I to...do the thing?"
"Yes. Frances can stay with us a couple days." Frances is my-...she's my biological daughter. My father forced me to have sex with my best friend or he'd hurt my mom. Turns out Martha got pregnant and Alex was there to comfort me as I cried about ruining Martha's life. She had to drop out of college and get two jobs. I pay child support and I have a good relationship with her. She's five and adorable. I love her and Alex with all of my heart.
   "How did you-?"
"You're not exactly quiet when you speak on the phone."
"Thank you, Alex!" I squeezed him in a hug and he chuckled.
"No problem. Just...please keep her under control."
"I will. Scouts honor." Alex doesn't like children. He won't tell me why. I mean it's none of my business but I still like to know about my best friend.
   "Ok. I'm taking a nap."
"I'll wake you when she gets here." Alex nodded and flopped on his bed. I kissed the back of his head and he started to snore quietly. I chuckled and slipped out of the room, letting him sleep.

   "Daddy!"
"Frances!" She jumped into my arms and Martha laughed.
"Thanks so much again for watching her, John. I know Alex doesn't-"
"He said it's ok. I mean this little absolute angel is my fault." I tickled Frances and she laughed.
"John, we talked about this. None of this is your fault and you're ok."
"Frances, why don't you go wake up Alex?" She ran off and started to search the apartment. "I know but I ruined everything. You had big plans!"
"John, it was my decision to keep her. Nothing is your fault." I nodded slowly and she pulled me into a hug. "It's ok, John." She kissed my cheek and I kissed her's, it was our way of saying 'I love you but you're a friend.
   "Bye, Martha."
"Bye, John." Screaming pierced the air and Martha jolted.
"I think she found Alex." I laughed, Martha waved goodbye and I closed the door. Alex crashed into me and hid behind me. Frances rounded the corner brandishing a toy sword and I started laughing. "Which one of you is my five year old?" I teased, Alex hit my back and I laughed harder.
"She smacked me with a foam sword!"
"Come here, Frances." She scurried over and I disarmed her. I crouched down next to her and Alex stood over us. "Remember the guy I told you about?"
   "The one that's stupid?"
"Yes, he's very stupid." I laughed, Alex flicked the back of my head and I glared at him for a moment before returning to my daughter. "Well this is my very best friend, Alex." Alex smiled and I grinned. "Alex, this is my daughter, Frances." Alex held out his hand and Frances shook it.
"Ya know." Alex squat down in front of her. "All of the most powerful people in the world have a firm handshake. I think you-" he gently poked her chest. "-are gonna grow up to do great things." Frances giggles and I smiled endearingly at Alex.
   "Daddy, I want airplane!"
"Oh god." I stood down and picked her up. She put her arms out and I ran around the room holding her above my head and making airplane noises. Alex laughed and sat on the couch. I flopped next to him and turned on the tv. I put on one of Frances's favorite shows. Alex and Frances yawned at the same time and leaned against me. I chuckled and laid Alex in my lap and Frances on the rest of the couch. When both were sound asleep I put Frances to bed in my bed and Alex in his. I kissed both of their foreheads goodnight and fell asleep on the couch.

Alexander's POV

I don't hate kids. I just don't want to risk what happened to me happening to them. I'd love to have kids one day but I just can't risk it. I love John so much but I can't tell him because-...well. Two reasons. One he'd never ever love me back and two, if he did Frances would become my daughter-in-law...sort of. I'd be one of her parents. I can't do that. Of course John knows nothing of this. He'd think I'm weak and scared. I just want to help and I help best if I just stay away. I agreed to let Frances stay because I know how much she means to my John. I woke up in my bed and glanced at the sleeping Frances. She turned over and I carefully hid the foam sword under my bed. I snuck out of the room and found John on the couch. I know he hates sleeping on the couch because it makes his back hurt like an old man but it's sweet how he always takes the fall. I brushed his wild curly brown hair back and kissed his forehead. He stirred a bit and I knelt next to him.
"John?" I shook him a bit and he turned over. "Wake up, Jacky." I stroked his hair and he blinked a bit.
"Morning, Lexi." He yawned, he groaned and stretched.
"Why did you sleep on the couch?"
"All the bed were taken."
"You could've taken mine and slept in the same room as your daughter."
"This isn't up for debate, Alex. Can you make breakfast?"
"Of course. How does Frances like her eggs?"
"Just like mine." I nodded and started to whip up breakfast. Soon John and Frances were scarfing down eggs and giggling about something. I kissed the top of John's head like I always do as I sat down and started to eat my eggs. The tradition started when Martha first had Frances. John would cry most of the time and I'd kiss the top of his head and tell him everything was ok.
"Daddy? Do you love Mommy?" John dropped his fork and I touched his thigh under the table.
"Of course I do. It's just...a different kind of love."
   "What kind?"
"Um...the friends kind. I love her but she's my friend."
"Do you love Mr. Alex." I grinned at the name and blushed as John turned into a tomato.
   "Yes...I do. Very much."
"The friends kind?" John nodded and I removed my hand.
   "Mr. Alex?"
   "Hm?"
"Do you love Daddy?" I blushed and smiled.
"Yes, with all of my heart."
   "The friends kind?"
"Mhm." I lied, she seemed satisfied and returned to her breakfast. When we finished John put the tv on and I went to the bathroom. When I came out Frances was frowning at the tv, no one had seen me so I moved to just go to my room but my attention was grabbed by Frances's question.
"Daddy? What's a soulmate?" John glanced up from the dishes and smiled.
"Well...it's like a puzzle piece or a magnet." John hummed. "They're your perfect fit. You could be polar opposites but still love each other very much. They're the one person who knows you better than anyone in the world. They're your one and only...forever and ever." John had a reminiscent smile on his face and he shifted. "There was this one time that Alex was so tired that he ran into a pole and instead of just brushing it off he started to yell at it and tell it off." Frances laughed and John chuckled.
"If I do recall that was like the first time we actually hung out." I smiled, John looked up and smiled.
"And if I do recall the only reason we hung out was because I was worried about you."
"You always worry about me." John elbowed me and I chuckled.
"But I'm serious, Alex. I worry about you." He whispered, I leaned into his touch and smiled.
   "I'm fine, John."
"Frances, go play in my room." She obeyed and John sighed. "Alex, I know you don't like kids but you're really good with Frances. I just don't see...why. I've tried not to ask because I know it makes you upset but I wanna know what's going on with you." I hesitated and sighed.
   "Sit down, John."
