Some things never change.

Like the nickname Alexander accidentally gave John his first day of kindergarten. It was John's birthday and he had begged his mom for a crown. He was the proudest newly-minted six year old boy to ever wear a crown to school. Alexander knew very little English so when John started talking to him he asked if John was a Princess.

Or the nickname John gave him the summer after kindergarten. Peaches. Alexander's family was very poor so the only thing he ever had for lunch was a snack cup of peaches. John always spared the boy food and even asked his mom to pack an extra snack for the boy.

By first grade the two were inseparable. They did everything, went everywhere together. They would sit alone at recess and talk about everything under the sun. They knew all each other's secrets.

In the summer of third grade Alexander's parents began fighting. Alexander spent many night curled up in John's small arms crying. He was afraid of what might happen to his parents. John was supportive and would beg his mother to let Alexander stay over almost every week.

In the beginning of sixth grade Alexander's parents split up. He was devastated. He cried for hours in John's arms. This was problematic for John. He couldn't deny what he felt for Alexander. No matter how hard he tried. Alexander couldn't deny it either. He longed to stay in John's warm embrace. He felt so safe and protected. Nothing else mattered when he was with John. They were too young to understand it yet but they loved each other.

However, Alexander's mother couldn't sustain them in the states. They had to move back to Nevis. John didn't want to let Alex go so they got married. They had a common friend, Francis Kinloch, officiate it and bought rings for each other. John bought Alexander a ten dollar ring from a clothing store that was painted to look gold. Alexander bought John a twenty five cent ring from a game machine, he had been upset about it but John assured him he loved it.

The day Alexander was supposed to leave he was to meet up with John to say his goodbyes but their flight was moved up. Alexander didn't get to say goodbye. They lost contact due to fears but they didn't see each other for years. Until...

Alexander's POV

Years Later

My first day of college. I'm terrified. I haven't had a proper education in years. I just happened to test high enough to go straight to college. I'm a Freshman and I'm twenty. I'm nervous. I walked down the corridor and sighed. "Lost already." I mumbled to myself.
"Alex?" I looked up into a pair of familiar ocean blue eyes and frowned.
"Who are you?" I frowned, still unable to place who he was.
"Oh...I thought you were someone else." He mumbled dejectedly. "Sorry." He started to walk off and I grabbed his arm, stopping him.
"...John?" He grinned and nodded. "John!" I dropped my books and jumped on him. " Oh my god!" I cried as he squeezed me tightly.
"I thought I'd never seen you again!" He huffed.
"I missed you so much!" I sobbed, John didn't put me down. We just held each other for a moment or so before John sucked in a breath and set me down.
"Do you have class or-"
"Yeah." I sniffed, wiping my eyes.
"Give me your phone number right the fuck now."
"Ok." I laughed, I pulled out my flip phone and we exchanged numbers.
"I'm going to text you. I swear to god I'm gonna text you." I giggled and he huffed. "Alright. I'll let you get to class."
"Wait!" I grabbed his arm again and huffed. "I don't know where the fuck I am."
"Alright. Let me see, Peaches." I grinned and hugged him tightly.
"I missed you so much, Princess." John chuckled and grinned.
"We have the same class." I grinned and bounced up and down. "I see nothing has changed." John teased, I laughed and bounced after him as he started walking.
"Can I hold your hand?" I asked randomly.
"Sure." John shrugged, he took my hand and I held it tight. When we got to the lecture room we grabbed seats next to each other and I pulled out everything I'd need. "Nothing has changed." He grinned.
"Oh, shut up. I haven't been in actual school since fifth grade."
"Damn." John frowned. "What the hell happened after you left?"
"Uh...A lot." I smiled, John chuckled a bit and sighed. The class started and John doodled on his notebook. I grinned and slipped him a sticky note that read 'Nothing has changed'. He rolled his eyes and nudged me.
When class ended we headed into the hall and John rubbed the back of his neck. "Um-...I have more classes but do you maybe wanna come over tonight and we can catch up?"
"Yeah. That sounds good." I smiled.
"Cool, I'll text you." He turned on his heel and I panicked.
"Wait!" I grabbed him and hugged him. John hugged me tightly and I sniffed.
"What's wrong?"
"I don't want you to go." I sniffed, John squeezed me tightly and sighed.
"I don't wanna go either but we have to. I'll see you later. I promise." I sniffed and looked up at him. "You can text me all you want."
"Ok..." John smiled and hugged me again.
"Promise you'll come back to me?" He begged.
"I promise." I sniffed, he let go of me and we parted ways. I hated it. I did not like it at all.
