A/N - in honor of band camp starting

John's POV

Band camp starts today. I'm nervous but it's a good nervous. I'm worried though. My dad kicked me out before I could get breakfast so I'm screwed. I'm on drum line so it's worse. The quads shall kill me. We left our drums on the sidewalk and joined the rest of the band and guard on the band pad. The dance teacher lead us through some work outs and some weird dance things. I noticed this one boy glaring at her. He had red hair, freckles, and he was small. He excelled at everything and he seemed to be about my age, a Junior. I'm not gonna lie I was totally starting at his ass when we did squats. I started to wonder what instrument he played when the guard instructor called the guard captain over and he looked up. He ran up and they started talking and I blushed. It's always been the stupid stereotype that drum line guys go for color guard girls. He nodded and sprinted back to his spot. The band director let us off for water and the boy shied away from the guard. I frowned and turned to Hercules.
"Who's that?" I pointed to the boy and Herc squinted.
"New guard captain. He's like brand new."
   "To captain?"
   "To New York."
   "How is he captain?"
"Apparently he showed up and blew everyone else out of the water so the instructor made him captain." Herc shrugged.
   "Why is he separated?"
"The guard hates him because he just rolled in and took everything over."
"Poor thing." Herc gasped and nudged me.
"Johnny's got a crush!" He sing songed, I turned beat red and shoved him.
   "I don't even know him!"
"Yet! Look! He doesn't have water!"
   "And that's a good thing?"
"It means you share, you idiot!"
"Where Lafayette? Why don't you share yours with him?" Lafayette plays the trumpet and he fits the stereotype.
"Go talk to the captain and I'll share water with Laf." I grinned and hopped up, grabbing my water jug. I walked up behind him and smiled.
"Hi. I thought you'd benefit from some H 2 O." He jumped a little and looked up. The guard girls were clearly gossiping about him and I glared at them.
"Th-Thanks." I handed him my water jug and sat down.
"So did they give you a name along with those adorable freckles?" The boy blushed and nodded. "Are you going to tell me what it is or-..." The boy shook his head and glanced at the girls huddled in a circle. "Not havin' a good first day, huh?" I asked, letting my southern accent slip and drawl. The boy shook his head and I hopped up. "Hey, Guard!" I called, some of the girls gasped and giggled.
"Hey, John!" They squealed and swarmed me. He looked up and I winked.
"So ladies...I was thinking. Shouldn't you be...I don't know, talking to your captain and being a team?" The girls scoffed and laughed.
"We don't even know him! And he's a boy! He's gross and ugh! Just look at that hair!" I glanced at the boy and sighed. "So Johnny, what do you say we can work on plies?" She started to touch my chest and I pushed her hand away.
"Yeah, I've been meaning to get help on those." The girl grinned and took my hand. "Hey, Freckles! Can you help me with my plies?" The boy looked up and I pulled my hand away from the girl, holding it out to him. He slowly took it and I hauled him up. I dragged him away from the guard and smiled. "I honestly don't think I'm doing them right. Like...at all." The boy chuckled quietly and I cocked my head to the side. "Are you shy?"
"I-um-I'm pretty m-messed up." He mumbled, I smiled and pulled his chin up.
"I'm messed up too." Alex looked at me questioningly and I smiled. "I don't exactly have the best dad."
   "A-at least you h-have one."
"Are you having an anxiety attack?" He nodded slowly. "Am I-" he shook his head.
"Y-you're helping." He shifted and I smiled. "Alexander."
   "Wha-OH! Your name! John Laurens!"
   "Wh-what do you play?"
"The quads. I'm on drum line."
   "Oh...cool. I can toss a quad."
   "Toss a-"
"On rifle. Maybe I'll show you later." He chuckled, I smiled and nodded.
"Sure!" He was clearly getting comfortable and I couldn't be happier.
"Back on the field!" The director called, Alex jumped and I grabbed his shoulder to steady him.
"Maybe I could stand next to you?"
   "Thank you, John."
   "No problem, Alexander."
"My friends call me Alex." I nodded and I stood on a dot behind him. We did more workouts and I totally stared at his ass...and the rest of him. Oh, yeah...I totally have a crush on him.
