A/N - Where u at Christmas Break...3 weeks *sighs*
Alexander's POV
I shakily knocked on the door as the wind blew and I shivered violently. I was soaking wet from the rain and clutching a blanket around my slim frame. The door opened and John Laurens stood in front of me. He frowned and glanced back in the house.
"Alexander? What are you doing here?" I opened my mouth to reply but everything started spinning and I fell forward. John caught me in his warm arms and I tried to stay conscious. "You're as cold as ice! What happened to you?" Upon no reply he pulled me inside and closed the door. "Ma! Help!" His mom came running and gasped as the spinning got faster and I collapsed in John's arms.
My eyes fluttered open and I frowned. I glanced around the room and tried to gather my surroundings. Something shifted next to me and I glanced at it. A head of curly brown hair groggily rose and yawned. John rubbed his eyes and huffed before noticing me.
"Hey! You're up!" He smiled, I peeled my lips apart and let out a raspy cough. "How ya feelin'?" John asked gently, taking my hand and smiling. I weakly pulled my hand away and tried to sit up. "No, no, no. Rest, Alexander. Besides...you're not clothed."
"What?" My voice was very raspy and I blushed, lifting the blanket to see I was indeed unclothed.
"Your clothes were soaking and you were shivering. We didn't know what else to do. My mother... undressed you." I blushed again, I'm trans and I'm not exactly ok about. A woman who looked just like John entered the room and smiled.
"Oh, good. You're awake. John, will you go fetch the medicine, please?"
"Sure, Ma." John left and I tried sit up but his mother pushed me back down.
"Please, honey? Your fever is persistent."
"I h-have to g-go."
"No, you'll freeze. Not to mention you'd probably sink in the snow." She tended to the fire and I began to cough again. "Oh, dear." The door opened and John handed his mom the medicine. She measured it in the cap and held it out to me. "I'm sorry. The last time Johnny here was sick was when he was a little boy."
"Ma!" John scolded and I smiled lightly. I drank the medicine and she smiled.
"Good. I'll go make some soup."
"No, that really won't be-" she left the room and I huffed. "-necessary." John chuckled and pulled up a chair.
"She's always like that." I smiled lightly and coughed. "What happened, Alexander?" I sighed heavily and glanced at John.
"Can I, at least, sit up a bit?" John thought for a moment and nodded.
"Yeah. Mom's making soup anyway." I started to moved and groaned at the pounding in my head. "Here. Let me help you." He helped me sit up and made sure the blankets kept the warmth in. "What happened?"
"I got evicted a couple days ago." I mumbled. "I don't have the money to get a new place and they took all my stuff."
"Where's the rest of your family?"
"Gone." I coughed and John felt my forehead. I moved away from his hand and he removed his hand.
"What do you mean 'gone'?"
"Gone. My dad left us when I was ten. My mom and I got really sick when I was twelve...she didn't make it. Then there was a hurricane a few years ago and my brother died." John hung his head and I sighed.
"Out of all places to come...why come here?"
"It was the only place I could think of." My voice was really quiet and raspy and John moved closer to hear me.
"How do you know I wasn't gonna...hurt you." He whispered tearfully.
"I didn't. I had faith." John bullies me at school and sometimes throws me into lockers and beats me up. I know deep down he's a good guy. He caught me having a break down in the bathroom one time and I thought he was gonna make fun of me or hit me but he just handed me a roll of toilet paper and walked out. I heard him crying in the bathroom one time and he said something about his dad but I haven't put it all together until now. He always comes to school with bruises and his favorite sweater is covered in blood. I know he hates football and he loves to draw. He doodles all over his papers and his grades are pretty ok. "John-...does your dad hurt you?" John seemed to stop working and he coughed.
"Wh-what? No! Why would you think that?"
"You're always bruised and I know you hate football. I heard you crying a few weeks ago and there's no recent pictures of you. John...why don't you call someone?"
"I can't." He choked out, I reached over and took his hand. "My mom is divorcing him anyway and he'd just get angrier."
"Where is he now?"
"In a hotel across town. My mom filed a lawsuit against him and she's gonna get full custody of me." He stammered, I smiled and rubbed my thumb on the back of his hand. There was a knock on the door and John wipes his face. "Come in." Mrs. Laurens entered the room and smiled.
"Sweetie, you should go to bed." She cooed, running her fingers through John's curls. She set a bowl on the table next to me and I closed my eyes.
"No...I have to make up for-"
"You barely slept last night. I think that's payment enough." She whispered.
"Payment for what?" I croaked.
"Bullying you." He stammered.
"Go to bed, John."
"See! Even Alexander says so." His mom smiled, I closed my eyes again and John huffed.
"We can talk in the morning." I assured, John nodded and let go of my hand.
"Goodnight, Alexander."
"Night, John." He left the room and his mom turned to me.
"Can I please go?" I whimpered.
"Honey, I heard about your situation. You can stay here as long as you need." She brushed my hair back and I pulled away. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop but I heard you talking to John and, honey, it's ok to ask for help."
"I don't need help."
"Alexander, you were shivering uncontrollably and your fever is dangerously high. I know John wants to take care of you to apologize and as a mother I'm not going to just stand by. It doesn't make you weak or a loser and John's not being forced anymore-"
"Forced?"
"His father threatened to beat him if he wasn't just like the boys in the movies."
"What?"
"His father is constantly drunk."
"Oh." I felt guilty and sniffed.
"Oh, honey. Don't cry." She handed me the bowl and I reluctantly ate. "There we go."
"Mrs. Laurens? If I may?"
"Oh please. Call me, Eleanor."
"Eleanor... you raised him well. I know he's not a bad person."
"Thank you. Eat up and get some rest." She got up and moved to the door.
"Eleanor?" She paused and smiled at me. "Thank you for helping me." She smiled and kissed my forehead before closing the door. I finished the soup and fell asleep.
