A/N - I'm loosing it
John's POV
I work in a mental hospital. I like my job. Helping people has always felt right to me and with this job I get to help a lot of people. Some cases aren't hard and other are very hard. Most people get released. Some die here.
"John?" One of the other doctors asked, I looked up from my computer and smiled.
"Hey, Peggy."
"Washington wants you." I frowned and stood up, heading to his office. Washington is the lead doctor here and he's like a father to all of us.
"John! Sit down." He smiled, I sat and smiled as well. "I've got a new patient for you."
"Oh?" I frowned.
"He's a tough case." He handed me a file and I flipped through it.
"No diagnosis?"
"We were hoping you could assist us with that. He hasn't spoken to anyone since the hurricane and loss of his brother. He's hostile and wary."
"'Possible schizophrenia'?" I read aloud.
"He doesn't follow conversations and he hallucinates. The only reason we know he isn't mute is because he was screaming for his deceased brother two nights before his transfer." I nodded and Washington smiled. "You're kind, John. We hope that will help you."
"What room?"
"1776." I nodded and headed to the room. I pushed the door open to find a man sitting on the, He was staring out the window and wearing a straight jacket. He had shoulder length dark brown and sunken hazel eyes. It was clear he hadn't slept in ages and he had stopped taking care of himself. I quietly close the door behind me and watched him for a moment. He was skinny and small, definitely malnourished.
"Hello." I hummed, he didn't respond or move. He only stared out the window...like it was telling a story. I glanced at his file and read his name. "Hello, Alexander?" He looked over at me and I smiled. "Hey, my name is John. I'll be your nurse. If you ever need me just press that button there." I pointed to a button on the wall and he followed my finger. He turned his head back to the window and I moved to look out it as well. Outside was a family walking down the sidewalk. "May I ask what you're doing?" He glanced at me and looked back out the window. "Ok. We'll get there."
"Everyone has their own story." His voice was a whisper and it took me by surprise. "This family is obviously happy but they don't know how bad the world is. They won't last long." He explained, I sat on the edge of the bed and watched the family laugh and mess around.
"What makes you say that?"
"Experience." He met my eyes for the first time and I saw how broken he was.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" He shook his head. "Ok. Would you like to get out of that jacket?" He looked at me confusedly and I smiled. "It can't be comfortable." I started to take it off and he looked out the window again.
"What's your game?"
"What game?" I frowned.
"You're just trying to diagnose me."
"How do you know I haven't already?"
"Because I'm too hard to figure out. That's why I'm here."
"True and false. I'm not like most doctors. My priority is your comfort. I'm your friend above all else." Alex looked not convinced and I pulled the jacket off. "Is there a reason you were in the jacket?"
"She asked about him."
"Who?"
"The last one." He was talking about his last nurse.
"What happened?" He looked at me and I smiled.
"I shut her up because she tried to shut me up." His eyes got dark and I nodded slowly.
"What was she trying to do?"
"She was trying make me sleep. To shut up. I don't want to sleep. If I sleep I'll see him." I quickly scribbled that bit down and he glanced at me. "What are you writing?"
"Just notes. I'm doing my job so we can both get out of this." He turned back to the window and frowned.
"Gone." I looked and found that the family had moved on.
"Now you can give me your full attention." I smiled, he shook his head.
"There's still a story. There's always a story."
"So you like reading?"
"Writing." He corrected, I scribbled that down and he glanced at me. "His name was James."
"That's a lovely name. If it's ok, I'd like to circle back to that topic." He glanced at me and I smiled. "I want to know more about that story." I gestured to the window and Alex moved over. He pay the bed next to him and I didn't hesitate.
"Close your eyes." I obeyed and he gave an extremely detailed picture of what was out the window. He told me about the people who passed and the birds that flew. When he finished I opened my eyes and smiled at him.
"That's beautiful, Alexander."
"Alex." He didn't draw his eyes away from the window and I frowned. "You can call me Alex." I checked the time and huffed.
"I've gotta get going." I started to get up and Alex grabbed my wrist. His eyes were wide with fear and worry.
"You'll be back tomorrow, right?"
"Of course." He stood up and hugged me. I smiled and hugged him back. "I've gotta go. I'll be back tomorrow. I promise." He let go and watched me leave.
