C H A R L I E parked her car at the end of the street, while the rain still poured above her. She lowered the volume of her music and grabbed her phone, scrolling aimlessly through social media as she waited for Oliver's school bus.
After a few minutes, it finally stopped in front of her street and Charlie watched her little brother run off the bus. He stopped to wave at her, with the biggest smile on his face, until the young boy realized how badly it was raining.
Then he ran as quick as he could to the car, and climbed into the backseat.
Laughing, Charlie said, "Hey little man. How was school?"
"It was okay." Oliver leaned across the middle console to press a kiss on his big sister's cheek. "We played an awesome game at recess."
"Oh, what game?"
"The Avengers! It was so much fun."
Charlie smiled at her younger brother; thankful that he had a good day at school. "So I have some exciting news for you."
"What?"
"I was thinking we could get your Halloween costume today. This way you can pick out anything you want."
"Really?" Oliver asked with excitement. "I wanna go as someone cool. Like maybe a pirate or Iron Man."
"Strap in, we can go to the party store now."

Oliver stood in front of the enormous collection with hands crossed. His little face was smushed in confusion and Charlie stood behind him.
They had been in the party store for at least twenty minutes now, and the youngest of the Grant siblings was still having trouble deciding what he wanted to dress up as.
"What about this one?" Charlie asked. She pointed towards the pirate costume.
"No, it doesn't have an eyepatch."
"Wow," She scrunched her eyebrows; the same face her little brother wore. "What kind of pirate costume doesn't come with an eyepatch?"
"A stupid one." Oliver laughed. "I think I was the Hulk last year." He said.
Charlie knew he meant five years ago, though it was closer to six now. But she didn't say anything; she wanted him to forget about the five years he lost.
"You were." Charlie finally said. She shoved her hands in the pockets of the leather jacket she wore and moved to sit down on the floor. "Guess where I was today?"
"At work?"
She laughed. "Yes, but I brought a friend home from work. Guess where he lives."
"Uh... in Florida."
"Boy, if I brought him home I wouldn't even be there yet."
"Oh, right." Oliver laughed at himself. "Where?"
"The Avenger's building."
"No way!"
Charlie laughed and brought her knees up to her chest. "Yes, way. It was huge!"
"Maybe we can go trick or treat there. Do you think they give our candy?"
"I don't know, little man. Now let's pick a costume. I don't want to be here all night. This place gives me the creeps."
"That's because you're a baby."
"Oh, you can walk home now."
