T H E next day, after another argument between Charlie and Bucky, she found herself walking outside with her brother. His small warm hand was in hers, keeping her warm, and keeping his cool.
Oliver was rambling on about how he was finally able to hold the fire in his hand, after months of practicing, and was clearly excited about it.
The little boy skipped happily with his sister, under the warm summer sun, looking onto the large fields with full oak trees high in the sky, and he had the biggest smile on his face.
"I think your hair is really awesome, by the way." Oliver said as they sat down in the grass. "It's bad ass."
"And where did you learn a word like that?"
"From Logan. He's pretty cool. He's been keeping me company since you've been sick."
"And here I thought he wasn't a big fan of people."
Oliver laughed. "He doesn't. He hates when I follow him around. But grandpa says that I'm allowed to do whatever I want here."
Charlie smiled and looked down at her brother. "Whatever you want, huh?"
"Maybe not everything." Oliver smiled. "Can I ask you something?"
"Anything, little man."
"How come Bucky beat up Jace? And why did you come back with so many injuries?"
"That's a loaded question, Olly." Charlie sighed. "Bucky probably hurt Jace because Jace hurt me. And I came back with a lot of injuries because they had to torture me to bring my mutation out."
"Torture?"
"They did a lot of bad things to me. They hurt me me to bring it out."
Oliver's eyebrows pulled together as he scrunched his face. "But I thought they were good guys. That they were helping us?"
"No, they weren't. They wanted to use us because of grandpa." Charlie told him sadly. "But it's okay now. We are safe here."
