"When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me"

Ben E. King
Stand by Me

W H E N morning came, Charlie was woken to the sound of Oliver yelling her name. Her tired eyes were barely open before she felt the pressure of his small arms on her tired body.

Bucky stirred next to her. Their hands were still holding onto each other's.

"Charlie, what happened to your ankle?" Oliver asked with worry.

"It's just a fracture." She said tiredly, opening her eyes to look at his small face.

"Will it be like that forever?"

"No, no, Olly." She laughed. "Only a few weeks. I'm okay, I promise."

"You didn't wake me up for school."

Charlie's eyes widened and she sat up, looking at the time. A sigh of relief came from her when she noticed it was only seven, and the bus didn't come for another twenty minutes.

"Why is Bucky here? Is he still asleep?"

"He picked me up from the hospital, little man. He was too tired to go home."

"Okay. Cool. I'm going to eat breakfast." He leaned down to kiss her leg. "Now you'll be all better soon."

Then he was gone, closing the door behind him and running off to the kitchen. Charlie fell back onto her pillows, wishing she had stayed asleep. She wasn't sure if she'd be able to fall back asleep after that. While the bed was too warm and inviting, and the man next to her was a welcoming sight, once she was up she was up.

Charlie attempted to pull her hand away from his, but the action caused his eyes to open and wake from his sleep.

"Sorry. I hope he didn't wake you."

"Who? Noah?" Bucky was immediately sitting up and looking around the room.

"No, no. Oliver. He just came in here." Charlie tried to calm him. "Noah's not here. You're good."

Bucky looked around the room once more before he moved to climb out of the bed. "I'm going to make sure Oliver's ready for school and that he gets on the bus okay."
