E V E R Y T H I N G was cold. When the top of the container opened and the water drained, it shook just as her body did. The lights were dim but still too bright for her eyes; as she hadn't seen light in almost a day.
She didn't know how she was alive.
Noah sighed sadly and reached down to pick her up from the tub. "I am so sorry, baby. I hated to do that to you. But it worked. It must have. We're going to take some blood and then we'll get you warmed up. I am so proud of you." He kissed the side of her face and moved to set her on the examining table they brought in.
A beeping sounded from the device attached to his hip and he sighed yet again. "That's me. They are probably having trouble controlling that beast up stairs. I'll have them patch you up. We're almost done, Charlie. Then you and I can run away from here." The last part was just a whisper.
Charlie realized just how much she missed Jace Freeman in that moment.
When Noah was gone, her blood was taken from her numb body, and the guard picked up her body. He tried not to fixate on the physical change of the woman, but he couldn't.
Her hair had once been dark as ever, but now it was white as snow. And her skin was even paler; with her blue veins perfectly exposed to decorate her skin in a skeletal way. She was even colder to the touch; like ice.
As the guard carried her naked body out of the room and back towards her cell, Charlie shook and stared at the ceiling. The lights were too bright and everything was too cold. She couldn't feel a thing.
And when she was dropped on the floor she didn't feel the impact of it.
Steve Rogers had spent the last day and a half fully believing she was dead, because she always came back after a few hours. But when the door opened and she was once again there, he jumped into action.
He couldn't ignore the fact that she was naked; and not because she was naked, but because her skin was nearly pale and her hair was paler. If he hadn't seen her face he would have thought she was an entirely different person.
"What did they do to you?" Steve asked, hurriedly putting the clothes that were dropped next to her on her. The dark colors contrasted against her skin, so much so, it made her look paler.
