M O N D A Y has come painstakingly slow, but soon the day began. And Charlie was dreading it only slighty; it was the start of a new week full of work. And after being off for nearly a week with her cold, she definitely did not want to go back.
But she needed the money.
And knowing that Bucky Barnes would be coming by today made it easier to get herself dressed and make sure Oliver was up for school.
And it made it easier going through the motions of her typical Monday workday. Inventory, baking, serving customers, and arguably the worst, standing on her tired feet for hours on end.
But when noon came and the bell rang, butterflies filled her stomach when she saw her friend walk through the door. She wasn't sure why she suddenly felt nervous but when she saw his smile, it got worse.
"Oh," Addie said when she walked through the back door. "Charlie, I didn't know your boyfriend was here."
"I don't think you'll ever stop." Charlie said. She was in the middle of putting the last of the new pastries in the display case. "You need to get a girlfriend."
"I'm trying." Addie said. Then she walked passed Charlie and pinched her ass. "Too bad you're straight."
"Ow, hey!" Charlie moved away and rubbed the spot that was now red from the assault. "Who said anything about that?"
Addie laughed loudly and grabbed gloves from the box. "Go on your break with him, already. I know you two must be going through withdrawals."
Charlie tried her best not to smile. "Shut up." She said.
Then she walked into the back of the shop to take of her apron and grab something to eat. When she finally got to the back table where Bucky Barnes was waiting for her, she was more than thankful to be on her break.
"What was Addie talking about?" Bucky asked her when she sat down.
"She's just being an idiot, as usual." Charlie said before she tore a piece from the pain bagel she grabbed.
Bucky nodded but didn't say anything, and instead he took a sip of his black coffee. "How are you feeling?"
"Better. A lot better, actually. I've pretty much stopped coughing. And Oliver hasn't gotten sick yet so hopefully things are going good at the Grant household."
"How was your weekend?"
"Uh, too short." She told him honestly. "I took Olly to get a new jacket since his old one was apparently too out of style. And then yesterday I cleaned the house and finished my show. But how was your weekend?"
Bucky felt something stir inside of them when she asked; because he could tell she genuinely cared. "It was okay. I worked with Peter a lot. I listened to some more of that band, I forget the name, your dads favorite song."
"Oh! Rush?" Charlie asked with wide eyes and surprise on her face. When he nodded, she smiled. "Wow, that's cute. Did you like them?"
"I did."
"I knew you would! I like them too."
Bucky couldn't help but smile because she was smiling. Then he pulled out a piece of paper from inside his pocket with his metal hand. "I uh, I made this for you. It's a few songs I used to listen to way back when." He was nervous.
She took the note from him and read over the titles, not necessarily knowing them. She also noticed the note was old. Still, Charlie smiled brightly. "Wow... this is the equivalent of a mixed tape. I'm so honored."
Bucky laughed for a second before he realized he had no idea what she was talking about. "Wait, what?"
