There, a few branches up was the fucking bird. It had picked up a fallen apple and had settled down to eat and, at this angle, it was positioned perfectly for Keith to finish his drawing of it. The bird must have been an escaped pet or something because Keith had never seen one so beautifully coloured before in the city parks. Saturday last week he'd started drawing it but it had flown away before he could finish and he couldn't stand an unfinished drawing. Also this would make a nice addition to his art portfolio, now he just needed to draw it.
Then, everything went wrong at one. A gasp came from somewhere behind Keith. Startled, he lost his balance on the branch. His arms windmilled frantically before he tipped backwards. "Oh, shit!" Grabbing onto the first thing he could, he fell and dragged the thing with him. He landed heavily on his back and the thing fell on top of him.
"Well fuck," said the thing. It was a handsome latino boy who looked as dazed as Keith. Their faces were so close and the boy was banging on his chest. Keith blushed a furious red. The boy scrambled off him, spluttering in flustered anger. "You scared it away!"
"Me?!" Keith jumped up onto his aching legs.
"You were the idiot who scared me into falling out of a tree!"
"It's not my fault if you're a scaredy cat! It's not like I pushed you!"
"Scaredy cat? Are you a kid? What the fuck were you doing in a tree any way?!"
"I could ask the same about you, mullet," said the boy, crossing his arms and pouting.
"I was- shit! Where's my sketchbook?"
"My camera!" the boy suddenly panicked. They searched around. Keith picked up a really nice looking camera. It was was, thankfully, undamaged.
"Here you go." Keith handed the boy his camera. The boy grinned, adorable dimples showing.
"Thanks, man. Swap," he said, handing Keith his sketchbook back, their fingers brushing. "Sorry the pages are a bit crumpled. The name's Lance."
"Keith."
"I guess you've been trying to draw that bird? I've been trying to photograph it for the past three days."
"Yeah I've been trying to draw it for the past week." Lance snickered at this. It made Keith's heard race and his face flush.
"I'll make a deal with you, Keith. If you help me get a good quality picture of the bird, you can draw from it."
"Deal." And they shook hands.

"Operation bird spotting is go!"
"I told you we're not calling it that," grumbled Keith but he was trying not to smile as Lance's dorky enthusiasm. He loved seeing him smile like this, it caused his dimples to show. Lance put a hand in front of him.
"There it is!" The bird sat on a bench, a few feet away.
"You know what to do." Lance then held his camera like he was a police officer on a crime show. "Alright, don't miss."
"Miss? They don't call me sharpshooter for nothing." Lance gave him a cocky grin. Keith rolled his eye's and cautiously approached the bird. He threw half an apple in its direction. The bird cocked his head, then swoop down and started to eat the apple. By now Lance was crouching on the ground with his camera poised. He would snap a few shots, then move to a different angle and take some more. Finally the bird took off and with one last shot Lance put his camera down. He looked beautiful, staring into the distance like that. I'd love to draw him, thought Keith.

Lance walked Keith home. They talked the whole way back, laughing and messing around. It was dusk by the time they reached Keith's flat. Around them the city was changing for the night's approach. The neon light were waking up and the restaurants were opening their doors.
"Well, good night, I guess," said Keith awkwardly.
"Yeah, um, Keith. Can I ask you something?"
"Sure." Keith stared at Lance, he seemed to glow in the orange street light.
"Today was really fun and, I don't know if it's just me, but, um, it felt like- well, like-"
"A date," Keith finished.
"Yeah, and I wondered if you'd like to go on a proper date?"
"Yes!" Keith hugged Lance.
"Good." Lance hugged back.
